Racism in not a new concept in the United States of America. It is something that we have all witnessed and experienced at one point in our life and even though at times it may not feel like it still exist, it certainly does. Social crowds and political parties have been saying that racism is an issue from the past that should be forgotten in order to reach equality among all races in the United States. However, discrimination has been a dilemma in our country since the early beginnings. Even though the civil rights of African Americans as well as other minorities have improved over the last couple of decades, racism is still prominent and continues to have a strong presence in our society. Many ethnic and racial groups continue to fight for equality and opportunities every day of their lives, mainly during tough economic times. A study done by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or EOOC for short state that from 2011, it “has received 99,947 charges of discrimination on employment” and that “from 99, 947 charges of employment discrimination, race discrimination tops the list with 35.4% ("Racial Discrimination in the Workplace Statistics | NLCATP.org."NLCATPorg. N.p., 31 Mar. 2014. Web. 29 Feb. 2016). Most often than not, the racially inclined people have more of a difficult time doing things such as finding a well-paying job because they are judged from the get-go. The “American Dream” is, in a way, all about social mobility. The phrase “anyone can make it” is an expression that has been passed down to every American kid from generation to generation, but does that statement prove to be true? The gap that exists between the social structures in our society consist of family foundation, neighborhood isolation, revenue and much more. People are more likely to be judged and the opportunities become harder to obtain because of the color of one’s skin. However, social mobility can be encouraged through the investment of quality education, financial aid to widen the opportunities of children who come from underprivileged backgrounds, and welfare policies that help balance wealth
