Tartuffe’s actions of sharing what he has been given immediately with the poor, knelling when praying, and speaking in a way to convince the people that he can save them from sin. Orgon is talking to his brother Cleante ‘“He is a man who ….. a man who ….. an excellent man”’ (p.25) . He is trying to convince his brother of how righteous Tartuffe is but Cleante wants his brother not to act so recklessly by instilling so must faith and trust into one man. Cleante reminds him to be rational, “Be cautious in bestowing admiration, / And cultivate a sober moderation” (p.59). “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others” Philippians 2:3-4 (NIV). He shows how the church was not concerned with saving souls but controlling them. He wanted the world to see that men sin and they should not be held to a God-like status, continuing on to show the wickedness of the flesh and how these church leaders manipulated others into thinking that if it is not spoken it is not a sin.
