Theme Of Betrayal In Tartuffe

Betrayal is hurting someone that trusts you, or showing something such as desire that is not real. Moliere uses Orgon in Tartuffe to show betrayal. Throughout the play Orgon is betrayed by Tartuffe in a variety of ways. Orgon is loyal and kind to Tartuffe by offering him friendship, shelter, and even goes as far as to offer him his daughters hand in marriage. Tartuffe fakes his friendship with Orgon for personal gain such as when he tries to take his property and send him to jail. A person’s home is a place of comfort and where one feels most safe, therefore when you allow someone to enter, you are opening up a piece of yourself to them, so whenever they do anything to make it feel less comfortable or safe for you they are betraying your trust. He betrayed his daughter the most by trying to force her to marry someone that she isn’t in love with. He offered her to Tartuffe as if she was merely another part of his property, although a more valuable part. This may have been common at the time, but this behavior is unacceptable in most of today’s societies. Practices such as this do happen in some parts of the world though. A woman’s husband is chosen by her father or family. This is a controversial topic, because it is the culture for some people and they believe it is the right thing to do. Most women accept it because it is all they know, but some may not like it and feel betrayed if it is not a suitor that they feel is right.
