In today’s society we are constantly using batteries. These batteries however have changed dramatically over the years, from when once created to now. But with the invention of newer and newer batteries there are bound to be explosions of benefits, but with benefits can come fault. One of the most noteworthy benefits with batteries today is the length they last. Batteries now days last for extended periods of time, some batteries even last for 3 years, take car batteries for example. The reason they last so long is the fact the metal reacting in the battery is not incredibly reactive, allowing electricity to be formed without it depleting within seconds, such as …show more content…
Regulations for batteries disposal differ in each state and territory within Australia. In WA for example both disposable and rechargeable batteries are considered and are classed as hazardous waste- and are then place in steel drums which are encased in concrete so that air and water cannot corrode the battery casings. However in Queensland batteries are thrown in the bin with impunity. The only batteries currently recycled in Australia are the lead-acid batteries. These batteries power our cars and trucks; so more than 90% are recycled. The good news in safe and cheap battery recycling are underway, Melbourne has been running free recycling services for household batteries since mid-2007. The service is a joint initiative between the Government and industry to provide places where people can drop off their dead batteries. This has allowed for safer recycling of batteries so that batteries cannot do harm to the environment and can be recycled effectively and efficiently to improve our use of battery
