Wanting something is one thing, but sitting there and doing nothing about it is another. That’s pretty silly, right? Something that is desired usually doesn’t come to you with little to no effort, for some of us at least. Moving up in the work place and becoming a Target Team lead can be quite challenging, as well as rewarding.
Being a student- worker is a lot to balance, but if I am going to go to school full time and work full time I at least want to make a good wage. About two years ago, I was working at the South Target as just a regular team member (worker). When I realize I knew as much as some of the leaders, I wanted to move up in the company. A leader is a supervisor, this position requires no degree or diploma from an institution.

She approached the managers after I did and from what I saw I was doing much more overall in the store than she was. Then again how do you compare sales in electronics to sales in the Softlines, the clothing area? Everyone in the store knows that sales in electronics are way higher than Softlines. She made sales in her department and I made sales in mine, but she got promoted before I did and I wasn’t too happy about it.
After a few months of being ignored and working my butt off, I decided to go to the HR and told her I wanted to transfer. I told her that I was moving, but I lied. I did what was necessary for me to be successful in the work place. She was very helpful with my transfer and got on it right away. My next step was her telling me what I had to do and who I had to talk to in order for that to happen. Which wasn’t very many people, just the HR and Store Manager at the store I wanted to transfer to. Then, a few weeks later I was able to transfer to the San Rafael

Then in my second week, I was setting in the shoe department and finished the workload with no problems. The Presentation team lead approached me and let me know that I was doing such a great job. Also, she wanted to know if I was interested in becoming a team leader for Presentation because she was planning on leaving. Presentation is the work center of the store that resets the aisles when it is a new season or when we get new products that need to be merchandised appropriately. I said of course that’s what I’ve been waiting on at my old store. My next step was going to the Store manager, Nina, I asked her, “What do I need to do to become a team lead?” She told me, “Nothing, it’s what I need to do for you. I need to put you up this thing called the pipeline, so that the district manager knows that there is potential talent that would like to be moved up in the company.
