Target Scavenger Hunt Gender Analysis

Improved Essays
During the “Target Scavenger Hunt” assignment, my perspective of gender has been expanded on what society thinks about gender. In general, Target separate the products into different categories, so the products could easily be found. In other words, the way they organize the stores is to appeal and advertise consumers to buying the items. For example, like Daniel had said in class, women’s clothes would appear first before any other clothing because women/mothers looks for clothes than men would. The men’s clothes is usually way in the back than it would be for women’s clothing. As well as, usually it’s to try to get mothers to buy some clothes, while they walk through the store to finding clothes for their kids.

Our society today chose to put labels on things just like the Igbo tribe did in the book “Things Fall Apart”. With many products that are sold to the public they have a gender specification, saying that it is only used for one gender. Also in the story the use of labeling something with a gender gives it a negative or positive look, which isn’t exactly fair in either society. In our daily lives we see things labeled as “for Men” or “for Women” and that would really downplay the human right of choice.…

Do genders really matter? In the article of “Learning to Be Gendered” by Penelope Eckert and Sally McConnell-Ginet, Eckert and McConnell-Ginet speak deeply about how gender categorizing is irrelevant. We are judged by color, the toys that we play with, the clothes that we wear as well the way we speak since we were young. Many people talk about gender equality but we’ve been categorized by our gender since we were in the womb. Eckert and McConnell-Ginet tell us that while we might find it normal to provide some visual representation of an infant’s sex like when hospital nurseries provide pink caps for girl’s and blue caps for boy’s, color coding has nothing to do with the infant’s medical treatment (737).…

Like many forms of folktales, Fairy tales serve as enduring classics which ubiquitously permeate our culture. “Pans Labyrinth” or “El laberinto del fauno” by Guillermo Del Toro is a profound 2006 cinematic film which idiosyncratically serves as a spiritual successor to the traditional fairy tale genre. A dark and forebodingly twisted fantasy--- Pan’s labyrinth is set in a period of history when the fascist Franco regime was in power. The underlying patriarchal society, the prominent illustration of explored dualism between male rationality and female sensibility, the ambiguity amongst both a visionary fictional realm and the brutality of reality, all contribute to the beautiful esotericism of the narrative.…

For my observation, I decided to go to Macy’s, a large department store in Coronado Mall. I entered Macy’s from the first floor of the mall, where their makeup and perfume section is prominently displayed. Almost all the cashiers in the makeup and perfume department were female, except for one man. Behind the makeup department are women’s clothes, lined with racks of sale items. There are two more sections of women’s clothing upstairs, ranging from ‘juniors’ to ‘plus-size’.…

Race and gender are usually questioned whether they exist, exist as natural kind, or exist as products of the society. In this paper, I will talk about Nagel and Wilkes’ ideas on personhood, and how they are related to natural kinds. Then, I will present and compare between Haslanger and Sveinsdottir’s accounts on gender and between Mills and Spencer’s account on race. Finally, I will explain why race and gender can’t cease to exist.…

Female identity means how women are perceived and how women are as humans, and this a concept that can be interpreted in many different ways depending on the culture, opinions, and author. It has been debated for many years of what female identity should be defined as, for example in Catholicism they believe mostly that the women should serve the man, but in cultures like the Huns perceive the women to be just as capable as the men. Female identity can vary; and the way female can vary through different aspects in the world is an extremely interesting thing to explore. As a young female person transitioning into the working world, exploring how women are perceived outside of high school would be an intriguing aspect to explore.…

Social construction of gender is a popular topic in today 's society. The Feminist Agenda states, “A social construction is something that doesn 't exist independently in the "natural" world, but is instead an invention of society” (1). In other words, social construction of gender is formed by the ways in which we view and value gender roles. According to society, females are supposed to be interested in makeup, fashion, and colors, such as pink; however, men are expected to be into the gym, sports, and colors such as blue. Although these customs and rules do not exist, people all act as if they do because it 's in their nature from the time they have been born.…

Judith Lorber (1994) describes gender as a type of institution that has established patterns of expectations for individuals based on whether they are male or female. She believes that gender affects individuals and their social interaction, gender is traceable, can be researched and examined. Gender establishes a set of expectations for us to follow and has a huge impact on social processes and its organization. This institution is purely based on a set of learned ideas that have shaped the way our society thinks and has nothing to do with our actual biology.…
