Current Competitors
Target has to maintain a consistent sustainable competitive advantage over competitors in the retail industry to have continuous success and growth. Target must continue to be innovative, creative, and up to date on consumer wants and needs. Some of Target’s current competitors are Amazon, Costco, Walmart, Zappos, and Sears. Each competitor has mastered in a department that is excelling over target. For example, Amazon is well-known as an online, same day delivery service. It is very tough for Target to compete with Amazon in this department being that target is not well grounded in online service compared to Amazon.

The bulk of its revenue is from fashion and household items. They have a strong presence in brand loyalty, store presentation, high quality products, marketing and creating a great shopping experience for the guest. Target is a discount store but is viewed as higher quality products over Walmart and Ross. Target offers price matching for online retailers, a Target REDcard, a Target card, and a Target Visa card. Target also has a private partnership with stylists.

Weaknesses
Due to discontinued operations Target received a loss on termination and other burdens. The charges totaled to $5.1 billion. This loss had a high impact on Target. Target does not have as many locations compared to its current competitor, Walmart. Target has no store in Vermont, Alaska, Hawaii and limited stores in international markets.

Amazon provides low prices and the flexibility to purchase from home. Amazon has an excellent reputation as an online business compared to Target. Walmart is also a top competitor for Target. Walmart has created Neighborhood Markets which interfere with areas that Target tends to. Walmart has also been promoting its online shopping. The younger generation is very tech savvy and prefers to shop online in the convenience of their own home. Target is forced to enhance their online shopping experience and match the prices of Walmart and Amazon prices. Target is competing against forceful and well-polished retailer and Target must be aggressive to sustain in the retail industry.
