Over the last 6 years I have held various entry level positions within Target. Starting off as a Cart attended to a Starbucks trainer and everywhere between, I continued to learn and improve my skills not only as an employee but an individual. Target has given me so many opportunities to develop through training and on hand experience, to being able to observe amazing leaders. Within the last two years, I started applying for leadership positions from Starbucks to Sales floor and pizza hut. Many people have mentioned that applying and not getting positions looks bad, but I say that no matter if you get the positions the is a unimaginable amount of experience you get from interviews. At some point, every leader probably thinks about how they want to lead and what is important to him or her as a leader. During the CSC coursework, I wrote my command philosophy, which gave me an opportunity to reflect on past leaders I had encountered, and project how I wanted to lead in the future. The command philosophy was a statement, written to the members of the unit, about what I valued as a leader. As a foundation for how to approach this philosophy, the CSC coursework described USMC General Lejeune’s teacher/scholar leadership approach (USMC CDET, 2013a). This approach to leadership rests on a foundation of ethics, directly supporting an ethos of core values, mode of conduct, leadership principles, and leadership traits (USMC…

For this assignment I chose my mock interview to be with Target. Target is a company that I could very well see myself working for in the future, whether that be later on in my career or during an internship. My first contact with them was at the career fair where I learned that they value leadership development for their employees and improve upon their strengths. I appreciate their business model and their stores, so I thought it would be beneficial to interview with them.…

I feel that this 2 phase simulation has definitely enhanced my personal skills within leadership and teamwork but I definitely feel this was not the result from the simulation alone. Since the team went for a more democratic style leadership, I was able to utilise 2 main management models I learnt about within this course one being the “Situational Leadership Model”. This was highlighted within my actions more so in the second simulation rather than the first and it defined my position within the team which depended on how each member would respond to situations along the simulation. Due to my personal motivation within the second simulation, I was always looking for opportunities in which I could further progress both my goals and my team members goals at the same time thus having the path-goal theory representing my role within the team. Since the team was really motivated to do well in the second simulation after our poor performance in simulation 1, I could agree that the group was at the fourth stage of readiness where a majority did the best they could in attempt to improve our results and we viewed each other’s inputs equal to any other team member.…

More recently, leadership, as evaluated by the workforce, has been an issue of concern throughout the federal workforce, but particularly in the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) (Office of Personnel Management (OPM), 2012a). In evaluating the 2012 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS), the Partnership for Public Services noted that although for several years federal employees had not provided high remarks for their leaders, scores on leadership dropped remarkably for the first time since 2003 (2013). Effective leadership ranked 9th out of the 10 workplace categories measured for six of the 19 largest federal agencies (including DHS) (Partnership for Public Service, 2013). Agencies which rated high included the National Aeronautical…

We have all seen toxic leaders in one form or another in the Special Forces regiment. They demonstrate qualities such as selfishness, distrust, and an apparent disdain for their subordinates. Because this can be so detrimental for the function of the unit, we focus on toxic leadership and try to identify certain individuals who possess these traits in order to prevent it. While this is a very important step, are we focused too much on the individual and not enough on the system? Could there something that we are doing as an organization to bring out these traits in certain people?…

Introduction The coach’s role is to develop the coachee’s resourcefulness through skillful questioning, challenges, and support; not advising because when advice is given, the coach implies that he or she knows best and that the coachee does not (Rogers, 2012). Coaching requires a listening ear to ensure that the coachee is understood and is making decisions that will ultimately help accomplish the goals. During this final coaching session, my client and I will be working together to close the coaching sessions and then determine the next phase of our relationship Pre-Coaching Plan…

I was fortunate enough to attend the 2016 H. W. Sumners Leadership Conference where I would have the opportunity to meet a unique pool of influential individuals. Most of my leadership experiences had come from group projects with students who I were familiar with, and the conference gave me the chance to become a team with strangers from across the United States and Mexico. I was not aware of how much I was actually going to get out of the conference. Through the elective workshops, I learned much more about my leadership style and who I could become as a leader. Through the speakers, I learned about the power of creating a vision and pursuing with unyielding faith.…

I have already utilized this knowledge to implement successful changes within my own agency that has produced positive outcomes. This program has taught me how to improve upon my own leadership skills by developing the right perspective to perceive situations in a different light. If we view every idea or situation through one lens, we are limiting our capabilities, therefore degrading our ability to realize different options or alternatives. Multi frame expands our perception, therefore providing unlimited possibilities in analyzing a situation, (Smith, 2011).…
