Target Gestures

In total, the recording averages out to a minute and a half, a time I thought would be short enough for the main points in the story to be easily remembered, while still achieving vivid gestural detail. All four of those detailed gestures listed above are what I will refer to as the ‘Target Gestures’ throughout the rest of the paper. They are the ones I had anticipated would be carried out in the re-tellings of my story. Purposefully, I sought to incorporate each type of gestures in the Semiotic Trichotomy as explained in class: Iconic (gestures 1, 3), Indexical (gesture 2), and Symbolic (gesture 4). This way, I could test which type pf gesture was used more by my participants, and see if I am correct to think the conventionalized thumbs up will be the most accounted for. The Iconic gestures are sorted by means of likeness, in other words, its …show more content…
As commented on in my class presentation before, re-telling it to the camera proved somewhat successful, but not as socially interactive as gesture is normatively preformed. In reference to McNeill, “part of the story of gesture is the role that it performs in interaction,” and I needed to create an environment in which my Target Gestures would be subtly absorbed within a social context (11). To better mirror this statement, the class suggested I follow the format of the game “telephone” with my sample group. By having my group telephone the story to each other, they are successfully engaged with an interactive accompaniment, and perhaps I would catch the collaborative, social effort to re-create the story. Speaking of catching the event, instead of keeping detailed notes of the telephone game, I would continue to record my participants as I had before. In this way, I would allow myself to re-watch the videos in slower speeds to pick up on the formations of the gestures themselves, and take screen shots to provide evidence for my

Throughout the production of The New Mrs. Tesman, the skill and technique displayed by Ernest Briggs and Kristina Johnson stood out amongst the rest, while the dry and unemotional performance of Matthew Bratko left much to be desired. Briggs and Johnson’s use of body language paired with their sly and conniving tones, provided an authentic element to their performance. However, Bratko’s lack of emotion and poor projection, seemed too scripted and forced, making it difficult to buy into his acting. Among the most effective techniques on display by Briggs and Johnson, their use of body language provided an authentic feel to their characters.…

Expertise, or simply a hobby, what matters, in this case, is the passion we have for a specific interest. I decided to share with the class a recent interest I have for Salsa dancing. I enjoy the rhythm that allows me to embrace both upper and lower body movement, with that Latin flare. For that reason, the purpose for the assignment was to incorporate a how to basic dance step routine that could roughly define Salsa dancing. I am quite content that I communicated primarily through my hand gestures.…

After the 24-hour fast, I discovered that I basically cannot live the life I live without mass media. Even after I turned off my phone for approximately 23 hours, I was still surrounded by media. Whether that was the pictures on the walls of my room, practicing choral music during a six and half hour rehearsal, drawing in my notebook, or taking a shower. In short, the only time I was actually fasting from media was the 10 hours I was sleeping. However, even then I could have been dreaming of scenarios or people I encountered through the media.…

Gestures are considered to be nonverbal communication because you usually don’t speak when you are using gestures. In America a wave means goodbye or hello; or a handshake could also mean hello when you are meeting someone for the first time. A firm handshake usually occurs between two males and their ad wanting to show…

The Deaf are a linguistic minority who face many communication barriers in the health care setting. For the Deaf population, American Sign Language (ASL) is the preferred method of communication, if not their native language. ASL is its own language, consisting of syntax, grammar, and vocabulary separate from that of English. Thus for many Deaf individuals, English is a second language and a language that they may not be completely literate in. This is critical to consider as most health care information is delivered in English and may not have a translated version in ASL.…

Gesture Development According to Jarzynski (2013), gestures are a significant tool used to predict a child’s language. Gestures are an important indication of the child’s language learning path in that, when a child displays a gesture they are employing intentional communication, which is a stepping stone to verbal communication (Jarzynski, 2013). According to Jarzynski, an example of this is when a “nine-month-old child is reaching towards something he wants, while looking back at his mom”. The child is communicating even though they have yet to acquire speech.…

American Sign Language is a unique language with diverse syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and morphemes, which includes grammatical aspects which are not present in English including classifiers. Despite the limited research in specific areas of ASL, due to ASL not being officially recognized as a language until 1960, the importance of classifiers is indisputable. Classifiers are “designated handshapes and/or rule-grounded body pantomime used to represent nouns and verbs” by representing a class of things with a shared characteristic (Aron 1). They can express many different key pieces of information and are an extremely complex aspect of ASL grammar. Classifiers are essential to nearly all levels of storytelling, making both receptive and expressive…

I felt that the energy and enthusiasm I brought to the stories helped make my performance believable and relatable. I tried to include Broadway fan snippets in each story to help bring that relatability through the script and through the delivery. For example, the “not throwing away his shot” line about Lin Manual-Miranda, which is a snippet from a song from Hamilton.…

With social networking emerging at the forefront of a new era for interpersonal communication it also brings with it new questions about nonverbal communication associated with the use of social networks. A study conducted in 2014 by Fleuriet, Cole, and Guerrero of Arizona State University (p. 429) allows us insight into our real life reactions to nonverbal cues and communication that we interact with while on a social network. This paper will explain the procedures followed by the researchers in order to understand not just the research and paper itself, but what the findings mean for many of us that are avid social network users. The study conducted had eight hypotheses that they wanted to test ranging from a more “general prediction, whereas…
