Target Fraud Case Study

The biggest thing that I have read that Target did wrong is telling publicly how many people had been affected by the cyberattacks. This is not something that should have been told to the public each customer should have been notified by email, mail or phone that their account with Target may have been hacked and they need to be looking out for anything that they would deem suspicious. In this notification Target should tell what information may have been compromised so that the customer knows if they need to watch out for any problems period with their information or just with their Target account. By doing this it might have kept some of the bad publicity down and not hurt the company as bad as if did. One other …show more content…
Steinhafel used leading when it comes to the managerial function that he exhibited. He did communicate about the cyberattacks right as they were noticed and got it out to the right people and customers even though he did it in the wrong way and told too much information publically. All that really matters is that the problem got out to the customers and to the right people so that it could be taken care of in a timely matter. “You won't be in charge of deceitful charges—either your bank or Target has that obligation. We're functioning as quick as we can to get you the data you require. Our visitors are dependably the main need. For additional confirmation, we will offer free credit checking administrations for everybody affected. We'll be in contact with you soon on how and where to get to the administration” (Steinhafel, 2013, para. …show more content…
Steinhafel’s ability to handle key managerial roles was not as good as it could have been. The reason being is that when it came to interpersonal relationships he announced it to the public and this should not have been the way that customers were first notified of the problem. When it came to information he did very good and got the information out to all the right people and got a handle on the problem right away. When it came to decisional he could have made a few better decisions but in the end it worked out and customers are protected a lot better than before.

If I was a consultant for Target the advice that I would give to the senior management on handling this type of crisis would first be to not do a press release. After the proper authorities have been notified each customer that might have been affected by this crisis should be notified by email, phone, or regular mail and told to wait for further information or be given a number that they can call for more information. A meeting should be held to figure out what all information has been compromised and what can be done about it so that it does not happen again. Once the problem solving has been put into place and everyone notified that could be involved in the crisis as far as customers are concerned a press release should be held. This press release should not tell exactly how many customers have been affected by this but to just let the public know of the

Another even that occurred in 2013 is the now infamous data breach. This incident threatened the future trust of Target’s core consumers. The criminals hacked into Target systems gaining access to customers debit and credit card information endangered Target’s standing amongst even its most loyal guests. Following the breach, Target experienced weaker than expected sales immediately following the announcement of this data breach that occurred in the fourth quarter of 2013 that can be seen from the negative percentage sales growth line item (10-K 5). Fiscal 2015 included the following notable items: Target sold their pharmacy and clinic business to CVS, recognizing a pretax gain of $620 million.…

He completely ignored his responsibilities and assumed that his actions had no impact towards his duties whatsoever. In fact, he even ignored best practices which further weakens his clarity of making decisions. Pavlo also obviously fails the visibility test because he wouldn’t have wanted or liked to be in the headlines or on the cover of any newspaper or any business journal that discussed his actions at MCI. As far as generalizability is concerned, his actions and decision making were in accordance with his veil of ignorance as he believed that since everyone in the company was involved in these actions including the management who directed him with his next steps, it would be okay to take such dreadful actions. Finally, I don’t think what Pavlo did is something anyone would want to do to in order to leave any legacy behind.…

I do think he made a wide decision when he decided to resign as CEO, but stay on as an advisor to help solve the problems and conflicts that go along with a serious incident such as this. I think that the steps Target went through after paying out millions of dollars to its customers and agreeing to the terms of implementing and monitoring new, more efficient cyber security systems has really helped. I would have suggested a commercial with the new CEO of Target speaking directly to those affected and making a sincere apology and pleading to the past, present and future Target shoppers for their…

A crisis versus a marketplace assault versus a nuisance and even versus a problem, can determine what a PR team will do to handle a situation where a company is in jeopardy. According to page twenty-four of Damage Control, Chipotle’s case would be considered a crisis because of the lives impacted by the diseases spread because of their food. A crisis is determined as an event that is originated from nature, in Chipotle’s case, the disease was caused by the food, which comes from nature (Dezenhall & Weber 24). The reason behind why the crisis of E. Coli is not considered a marketplace assault is because it was not intentional and so, Chipotle had a true crisis to deal with. “Damage control means more than having to say you’re sorry,” a chapter…

Thalidomide was patented by a German Pharmaceutical company, Grunenthal, in 1954. Originally, the company marketed the drug as an over-the-counter sedative to treat anxiety and sleeplessness; however, beginning in 1957, the drug was primarily used to alleviate nausea or morning sickness during pregnancy. Thousands of pregnant women, in over 45 countries, were prescribed Thalidomide from 1957-1962. It was not known until 1961 that the drug had serious side effects and was directly associated to causing birth defects. There are no firm statistics on the number of miscarriages the drug caused, but it is estimated that well over 10,000 babies worldwide were born with some degree of birth defect due to Thalidomide.…
