Target Corporation is the second largest discount retailer in the United States. It currently operates almost 1,800 stores in 49 states, and has been able to deliver high-quality, on-trend merchandise at discount prices to its customers, more so than their competitors ( Target Brands, Inc., 2016). The company’s mission is to make “Target the preferred shopping destination for their customers by delivering outstanding value, continuous innovation, and an exceptional guest experience by consistently fulfilling our expect more, pay less brand promise” (Target Brands, Inc., 2016). Target has been effectively achieving their mission statement, as the company has seen growth in the presence of times of financial uncertainty and turmoil in employee and labor relations.

Despite the growing attention of labor relations and issues in the retail industry, very few studies have been conducted to examine the impact of the relationship between the cooperation of labor management and productivity in retail. However, this is a vital aspect of the retail industry. In contrast, there have been several studies have seen that an effective labor management relationship is essential to promoting organizational change and increasing productivity in private sector employment (Black & Lynch, 2001). Labor/employee relations help to shape the culture, rules and policies of an organization.
