Target behavior to be changed: I chose to change my fear of speaking in public for the self- change project. It is important for me to change this behavior because I want to replace this fear with being confident while presenting myself in public, more specifically in a business setting.
Baseline and data gathering: The method I used to collect my baseline data (the measurement of my present behavior) was the SUDS scale. I used this method because the SUDS scale is for measuring “subjective intensity of disturbance or distress currently experienced by an individual”. This was method was also the most appropriate for my goal. I implemented the measurement process in my daily routine by recording (using the method in a small journal) my behavior

I worked on these deep breathing exercises and positive coping statements as homework assignments just like any other of my homework assignments. The relaxation training techniques that I employed were a variation of methods that included autogenic relaxation, visualization and Yoga. When using the method of autogenic relaxation, I repeated the word relax in my mind before the stressor was introduced. Using the method of visualization I formed relaxing images that I have experienced in the past and tried to use as many senses as I could like sound, smell and touch. Such as laying on the beach listening the waves while smelling the salty wind whip threw my body. I would visualize with my eyes closed in my car (quiet spot), these relaxing situations before I would have to perform my stressor. I also tried Yoga to loosen my body up, it was so tense before the intervention, it was unbearable at times. I incorporated the Yoga routine in my mornings before attending school. Over the past week, I have worked on my general and individualized target behaviors to fill out the DBT diary card to practice the experience before handing the form to my client. In addition, I have narrowed my individualized target behavior to these four behaviors; nervous, temper/panicky, irritable, and perfectionist. I, also, have noticed how my behaviors have been affected by the different variables that most of them are out of my control. When I fill out the diary card in the first night, I knew this was going to be a great experience because it is one of the first steps I had taken as a therapist student to experience how it feels to complete the diary card.…

Another effective stress reduction activity for me is having conversations with my family and friends. Often times, I like to keep things bottled up inside, and this isn’t usually helpful. When I am able to call my mom and talk through things with her, I instantly feel better and less overwhelmed. After hearing her advice, I am able to rationalize my own thoughts and go from there.
