Tardigrade (Water Bear), a water dwelling, 8 legged, segmented micro-animal has survived the space without any protection. They are prevalent in mosses and lichen and have a lifespan of a year.
Tardigrades were discovered by Johann August Ephiran George. The name means “slow walkers” . It is one of the most durable species because it can even survive fatal conditions like temperatures between -272 Degree Celsius and 150 degree Celsius, six times higher pressures, present in the deepest ocean trenches, ionizing radiation …show more content…
On 16th Feb. 1986, they were kept in an artificial hibernation chamber and finally on 16th Feb. 2016 they were successfully revived.
Tardigrades are said to be virtually indestructible on earth. Doctor Sidall, said “Without water the damaging effect of freezing cannot happen. It is a protection against the heat because the water cannot turn into gas that expands. Also, radiation needs water to do damage.”
A society named ‘ International society of tardigrades hunters’ has been formed. It aims at advancing the study of tardigrades’ biology while engaging and collaborating with public.
This animal has opened many doors for so that scientists can study these organisms and understand how can they survive the conditions of outer space. These studies might be able to find out ways for us to survive in the space with just pants and a shirt on. The problem of limited land on earth would come to an end . We would be able to explore the universe with a deeper understanding because of someone who decided to invest time and energy into something that seemed so
