The student level for the reading was “U”. Heather was attentive during the Running Record. I believe that Heather is good at prediction. She is confident in her inferences that she made from the title. Before reading the passage, I predicted that Heather would stumble on the big words in the passage. However, she read the bigger words correctly. What I found to be interesting, was that Heather would add words to the story. She was predicting what she believed that story would say rather than the word-for-word reading. She did pause on bigger words, but she could quickly figure them out. When reading, she had 10 miscues and 2 self-corrections. Most of her miscues were adding words to the sentences because she predicted what the sentence would say. Because of this same miscue, I am rating her accuracy level at 97%. In terms of comprehension, Heather understood the passage. She told me the basic story during the summary portion of the test. Her answers to the literal and inferential questions were accurate showing that she did understand what she had just read. She showed insight in comparing the birds’ behavior to human behavior. I rated Heather’s fluency as a level 3. She read fluently in small groups of words and used some expressive interpretation. For Reading Workshop, I would allow Heather to select her own book for independent reading. In this way, she will continue to read books that interest her and continue to instill in her a love of reading. In Guided Reading, I would introduce Heather to humorous poetry such as the poem by Dave Crawley entitled, “My Doggy Ate My Homework”. We would discuss how the author uses rhyme and humor in his poetry to tell the story. Because Heather adds words when reading a passage, I would also emphasize taking her time and reading the exact words. I would be watching that she does not add to the words in the poem. In a Literature Study, I believe I would like to see Heather read a non-fiction story and discuss the “truths” in the
