This name tag belonged to Dave Tarantino, a navy physician that was in the Pentagon when the hijacked plane hit. He was working in a different section of the office when the plane hit, so he went to the damaged part of the building to look for people in need of help. Working with Navy Captain David Thomas, they rescued Jerry Henson, who was trapped under debris. As soon as they were safely out of the building, Tarantino was ready to go back in to help any other injured people. Thomas, having seen Tarantino’s heroic efforts, grabbed Tarantino’s name tag. Thomas wasn’t sure if he would ever see Tarantino again, and wanted to make sure he would remember his name.
The first story this name tag tells, is how people kept going back into the building to help others. People like Tarantino didn’t even think about the fact that they could be stuck in the building. They were focused on everyone else’s safety rather than their own. This name tag also shares the story of people like Henson, who wanted to remember their savior’s names. To people that didn’t lose a loved one that fateful day, the events of 9/11 can feel like an awful nightmare that didn’t happen. The name tag makes everything that happened seem real. Because of this name tag people will forever remember Dave Tarantino for his heroic efforts at the Pentagon. It also has research potential because people at the museum found Dave Tarantino using the name tag. They were able to talk to Tarantino and find out his version of the events of 9/11. He told his story and his interview was put in a movie, where thousands of people can hear how he felt on that awful day.
