Tarantella Poem Analysis

The remarkable and an ambiguous poem, “Tarantella,” by Hilaire Belloc is based off of a traditional folk dance that originated from southern Italy. Having couplets, assonances, and consonances helps the poem to have an easy flow of reading and gives it the unique style of the Hilaire Belloc. The dance and music is very upbeat just like the first stanza of this poem and the frequent use of commas and the fluctuation of long and short lines epitomize the pace or rhythm of this stanza on whether it speeds up or slows down. Unlike the first stanza that had and upbeat and fast the tempo, the second stanza has seemed to gradually slow down due to how gloomy feeling it had. “Tarantella” is addressed to a lady named Miranda, who is in all likelihood the lover of the protagonist, a young man. Depending on one’s perspective, the author may be informing the readers that he is talking about the young man’s nostalgia with his love, Miranda. They met and an inn located in the “High Pyrenees” and in that inn it gives an impression of was an extravagant party with muleteers. “Straw for a bedding… wine that tasted like tar” these verses may be a feasible imagery of the setting in the poem, a time in a gruesome war. The characters in the poem appear as if they are not rich but rather poor. He is trying to recapture the splendid and magnificent moments he spent with Miranda. By what means there is extravagant dancing and ecstatic music and just how everyone in that inn his having a great time without giving a care in the world or any unpleasant situations they are facing at the moment.
