Tara Donovan is an American artist from Brooklyn, New York who creates sculptural installation art pieces out of everyday simple objects, such as plastic cups, paper plates, pencils, straws, and polyester film. Donovan transforms these ordinary everyday objects into large-scale installations which in some cases create a depiction of nature resembling landscape scenes including, mountains glaciers, icicles, rocks, and more. When Donovan was interviewed by Daniel Comiskey, he asked her, “Why use materials like electrical cable and plastic cups?” Donovan’s response was, “Everyday materials are easy to get and inexpensive. The definition of value is, the amount of lightness or darkness in a color or an object. Even though, the same color and size of polyester film is used to create the piece the light shining through makes it to look as if there are different colors of film. There is an infinite amount of grays between the black and white. The front of the piece and the edges appear darker and the black is sharper. Each layer below gets lighter and lighter as the light shines until the center of the installation where it becomes white at the point where the lights sines through. Darkness around the edges. Giving it a three-dimensional look. Kaleidoscope bluish tint different times of day gold. The third element seen in this work is space. The definition in art for space is, an unlimited extension in all directions void of matter. Space can be seen because it is as if the piece could be never ending. It looks as if it could continue in all directions.
