Learners in Wales also complete project work towards their English and Maths qualification. Anne Gravell states:
“Assessments should focus on improving and reinforcing learning as well as measuring achievements. It should help your learners realise how they are progressing and what they need to do to improve and/ or develop further.”

Reflection on learners assessment Gopee, 2008, states that proper assessment involves staying at learners side and observing them perform a clinical skill with the intention of analysing the performance and whether the skill was carried out competently. Therefore, assessments are an essential component of education and a key element of the student or learners experience. Consequently, assessments are used as a critical element during the mentoring process by mentors to constantly analyse and evaluate the skills set the students learn. However, the method of assessment must be considered in terms of reliability, accountability, validity, acceptability in order to evaluate the suitability of assessment itself.(Chandrat lake et al,2010 ) I have…

Furthermore, unlike criteria-referenced assessment, ipsative feedback focuses on learners’ progress rather than the final outcome. Thus, learners who receive and self-assess ipsative feedback are perhaps more intrinsically motivated. Of course , sometimes learners might be motivated by grades, certification, money and other forms of external rewards, but low-achievers could hardly be motivated because they find they cannot attain desired outcomes after much effort has been made. Ipsative feedback makes the progress visible in small steps and shows the potential of obtaining the desired goals.…

However, research suggests that assessment given in the form of grades is not in the best interest of the students. Instead, it is diagnostic feedback that produces the most success and growth among students (PERTS, 2016). This form of assessment, assessment for learning, is obtained through observation within the classroom (Duchesne & McMaugh, 2016). Diagnostic feedback reinforces the growth mindset as students are not given set grades, however, students are given feedback on ways they can improve and therefore promoting motivation. Assessment as learning occurs in a self-monitoring and reflection format.…
