Did you know that tapeworms are one of the first recognized parasitic worms?
Also did you know that people intentionally sell tapeworms for weight loss, although it’s illegal? Those are just some fun facts leading into many of the characteristics that these parasites give have. There are very many cause and effect reactions that tapeworms give off.
A tapeworm is a long, flat worm that attaches itself to your cattle’s intestines. A tapeworm body consists of multiple parts, or segments, with its own reproductive organs.
Tapeworms cause symptoms such as: nausea, weakness, diarrhea, abdominal pain, hunger or loss of appetite, fatigue, weight loss, vitamin and mineral deficiencies. However, sometimes tapeworms don’t have any symptoms occur.

Rat tapeworm is the accidental ingestion of parasitized insects like fleas and grain beetles can lead to infection with the rat tapeworm, Hymenolepis diminuta. This relatively small tapeworm causes few to no clinical signs in people. The next type of parasite is the dwarf parasite. The dwarf tapeworm, or Hymenolepis nana, is the only human tapeworm that does not require an intermediate host and human exposure is hand to mouth. This tapeworm is most frequently seen in young children, with diarrhea a symptom in heavy infections. Another parasite is fish tapeworm. The fish tapeworm, or Diphyllobothrium latum, is found most frequently in cool lake regions of the world such as Alaska, Canada and the Great Lakes region. Cattle get infected from eating raw or undercooked preparations of freshwater fish. Cattle infected with the fish tapeworm are frequently asymptomatic, and most don’t know they are infected until parts of the worm are passed in the stool. The last parasite is the beef tapeworm. The beef tapeworm, or Taenia saginata, is associated with cattle production. Cattle get infected when grazing on contaminated vegetation. Cattle can become infected with the beef tapeworm by eating raw or undercooked beef. Most cattle infected with the beef tapeworm are asymptomatic.
