Quickwrite (Tannen Quote)

Yes, I agree with Tannen’s quote because it speaks the truth. We have the tendency to treat people the way they look: “como te ven, te tratan.” These are also known as first impressions. Also, we label people in order to help organize and process what groups are similar or different. The benefit of seeing the world in patterns is that we organize society. Also, it’s great because some people actually do want to be a part of a group. They feel pride about actually taking a part of something. When we categorize ourselves, some of our own unique traits are forgotten. We use stories that have been passed on to us from our parents, friends, social media, and the Internet. Mostly, the stories that stick with us are the

    Larson's Quote Analysis

    • 126 Words
    • 1 Pages

In this quote, Larson purposefully placed the short sentence before the longer sentence in order to emphasize the word, “nothing.” The contrasting length of the sentences forces the reader to look back at the first word; in fact, it makes the reader question what Larson means when he uses the one word sentence “nothing.” The use of the short sentence in the beginning catches the reader’s eye, catching their attention, as if Larson had done this purposefully. If Larson were to use two sentences of similar length in this passage, then it would cause the it to have less power than the contrast does. He is stressing that the Columbian World Exposition was making much progress, bringing so much attention, but now it was going nowhere.…

The quote by Lippmann is one many of my basketball coaches have used, they always taught us “You learn a heck of alot more from the opposing team than I could ever teach you.” I believe that to be one hundred percent accurate. If someone who’s job is to beat you can learn from you, you will lose every time. They have their knowledge plus your new perspective and insight to help them gain an edge on you in every possible way.…

    The Raven Symone Analysis

Raven Symone has surpassed the child actor curse and become known, not only for her acting roles when she was young, for her present day persona. Raven has said many things that people agree with, and some that people do not. In interviews she says, she does not want to be labeled gay or African-American. Speaking to Oprah, she said, “I am American”. I think the uproar that stemmed from this is focused more on snippets of the conversation not the whole message.…

She once said, “Similarity--it is the bond that brings the people together” (Hercules) and that line embodies the views on the world and the people in this society. The social standards that humanity expects are unrealistic. Humans shouldn’t have to aim to be perfect because that’s not possible. They should aim to be their best self. Being original will help people accomplish their goals and dreams.…

Does everyone tend to be usually criticized and judged based on something he or she unintentionally has? For an instance, color. We did not choose what our skin color will be. But it greatly dictates and defines what and who we are for other people. Some groups of people are called by names which are insulting and abusive, based on the perception that they all look the same so they pretty do the same things.…

Hey, Ashley, I would like to respond to Professor Clark first and say that I do believe that people today dehumanize groups by generalizing them. For instance, many people run around and speak ill of Muslims completely ignoring the fact that Muslim isn’t a race of people, but the name of people who practice a particular belief system. Not to mention, there are multiple sects of Islam and various intricacies within each of them. Segueing back to the point, these types of generalizations degrade entire groups making it easier for people to collectively cluster swaths of people into a single stereotype – usually with negative connotations. Such a practice can easily increase the likelihood of aggression and or prejudice towards said groups because…

In the article “Don’t Let Stereotypes Warp Your Judgment” by Robert L. Heilbroner, Heilbroner argues that we, as people, are too quick to judge others. He makes a point at the beginning of his article that we judge people based off of stereotypes that society produces. We don’t realize that we are making these judgments, but based on statistics, most Americans would describe “suspicious characters” as “dark and foreign-looking”. We as Americans treat stereotypes similar to gossip. We spread stereotypes around the country and world and plant prejudices in people’s heads.…

One inherent quality in humans is the need to categorize things. We need order and in order to achieve order, we put things in categories. It is not even always conscious, but it is and has always been present both socially and institutionally in our society. As a society, we classify people in a process called stratification by race, class, and gender. By understanding human’s innate need to classify people through symbolic interactionism, we can develop a deeper understanding of the manifestations of social stratification in society and use that in order to make it known that this need to classify does not need to elevate some people and disparage others.…

When thinking about perceptions it occurred to me how many different ideas and types of people I know very little about however have strong opinions on. It is almost disturbing that we make so many conclusions without satisfactory information. Some of the theories that explain this explain that in ways it’s a self-serving necessity in social interactions, not intentional prejudices. However I don’t believe that lets us off the hook from continuously educating ourselves in order to form accurate perceptions of others. For a long time all I heard about Muslims was how violent and lacking in empathy they were so it had become impossible for me to see Muslims as anything else but bad guys.…
