Imagine a parent who lies to their child and doesn’t punish bad behavior. Well someone has already imagined that character. In the novel Tangerine by Edward Bloor the mother of the protagonist, Paul Fisher, is just that. Paul’s mom’s choices impact paul the most because they ruin his relationship with his brother, makes him constantly wonder about his eyesight, and hate himself.

However, Paul finds that story fishy and throughout the book, he tries to find the answer to the mystery of his eyesight (Bloor 34). But to no avail, until Erik said: “Shut up, Castor!” (Bloor 262). Paul then realized the terrible truth and was infuriated that his parents would lie to him.
Lastly, Paul’s mother made Paul hate himself. The worst thing any parent can do is make their child have a feeling of self- hatred. Paul's hates himself and feel like he’s an idiot because his mother told him he stared at an eclipse for an hour (Bloor 265). Paul doesn’t even hate Erik despite all the terrible things he does to other people, Paul, and Paul’s friends.
Despite her good intentions Paul’s mother ruined Paul’s relationship with his brother, made him worry about his eyesight, and made Paul hate himself. These choices made by a mother of all people were terrible and badly affected Paul, but it was there to teach the readers the theme of the book. The Truth will set you free. After Paul overcomes the lie than controlled his life he becomes a better person and perhaps Mrs.Fisher’s lie was for the
