This essay would discuss the way the material of an object can be used for dating or distinguish the origin. Tang Sancai pottery produced in different parts of China. Because of the material for the production from local sources, chemical analysis can apply to see the origin of the ware. This shows the applicable method that can be used to for distinguish the Islamic lead-glazed ware from Tang Sancai as well as the Sancai ware from different part of China. For dating the tools which is made of obsidian can be used to date the dates by the hydration dating and the limitation of the origin of it can help with trace back to where did it came from which can be used to interpret the distribution and trade route.

Four major kiln sites have been found in China producing Tang Sancai during the Tang dynasty, which are Gongxian Kiln in Henan Province, the Xing Kiln in Hebei Province, the Huangbu Kiln and the Liquanfang Kiln in Shaanxi Province (Ma et al. 2014). Material for Tang Sancai wares during the Tang dynasty came from the natural mineral which is locally produced. The colour it appeared on the glaze came from the natural impurities (Wood 2001). The chemical composition of the clay that used for Tang Sancai wares is different with the Islamic ceramics. The chemical analysis can help to identify the culture. Although more kiln has been discovered recently, the analysis of the kiln starts to make scholars to questioning the reliability of this method. For the obsidian, the thickness of the hydration layer on the tool can be measured and carry out equations which are used for dating.
