The Song dynasty ruled from 960 - 1279. In the Song dynasty they invented movable type printing. Before movable type was invented, there was just woodblock printing, “Although woodblock printing played an important role in the spread of information and commercial transactions in China, it was time-consuming technology.” (Museum, 2012). Because they invented movable type, printing became easier and more news and jobs were able to be created. With so many new works of literature coming out this made it easier for scholar-officials to give their son’s education, so their family could stay in a high positon in the emperor because their son’s would take over their job or an even higher one because of their education. It order to get a government position they strived for, they had to pass a civil service exam, which is set by Confucianism standards. Some people of this era did not like Confucianism standers and started and a new religion called Neo- Confucianism which gained popularity during this time. “It was a renaissance of traditional Confucian ideas as well as a reaction to Buddhism and Daoism” (Anirudh, 2011). The difference between Neo-Confucianism and Confucianism is “From the Neo-Confucian perspective, merely abstract knowledge was useless unless conjoined with ethical self-reflection and cultivation that eventuated in proper moral behavior and social praxis.” (Berthrong, 2016). The Ming ruled from 1368-1644 AD. In this dynasty the first Dalai Lama was crowed. “The Dalai Lama is the head monk of Tibetan Buddhism and traditionally has been responsible for the governing of Tibet” (Shennan, 2014). Dalai Lama is decided by the people. When the first Dalai Lama was seven years old, his mother sent his to a monastery (the home of monks where they live to dedicated there life to their spiritual vows) to begin his education. The first Dalai Lama was Gedun Drupa. Dalai Lamas believe that when they die their soul is reincarnated into the next Dalai Lama to help more people achieve spiritual highness, and thus is how there continue to be a praised Dalai Lama, because they believe they are still the same high level spiritual soul they once were just in another body. Also in the Ming dynasty they built the Forbidden City. The Forbidden City is a place that the emperor lived that was closed off from the empire so the emperor can remain safe. The emperor was the only “real man” that was allowed to live in the inner center of the city, the rest of the men that were allowed to be in there had to be Castrated, which is the act of removing ones testicles. The problem with the emperor being closed off in the Forbidden City was that he didn’t know what was happing in the emperor. This caused the empire to weaken throughout and easy to over throw.
