Good afternoon, Dr. Gowans!

I hope you are having a good break.

Rachel, Katie, and I have come up with a different JAXPO topic that we feel passionate about but it is a bit more controversial than the "tampon tax." We thought we should run it by you first and check that you were still okay with mentoring us.

We are considering discussing and advocating for better, more accurate representation in mainstream media for members of the LGBTQA+ community.

We understand that this is considerably more difficult than our previous topic because we have to advocate within the confines of church teaching. As such, we plan to learn exactly what the Church says and does not say about LGBTQA+ folks and advocate using the ideas of agent based virtue

The Tampon tax it is an issue that is gaining more and more attention around the world. According to Gloria Steinem “The tampon tax is part of an overall economic system in which the dry cleaner charges more for a blouse than a shirt—in which men are assumed to be buying necessities and women are assumed to be buying luxuries.” For example, in Canada, the tax on feminine menstrual products was lifted over summer, after thousands signed an online petition on the matter. In Britain, France, among other countries, are working to reduce or end the tampon tax. The founder of Feministing.com, and also columnist of The Guardian, Jessica Valenti wrote in 2014 a piece called “The Case for Free Tampons,” addressing critiques of the tax, stating that…

pursuits. It still generates a question whether a faith- based service is able to remain impartial towards the LGBT homeless youth, and provide necessary help despite professing a disparate ideology? In a scenario when an organization shares a convincement that any kind of behavior directed toward a person of one’s own sex should not be publicly approved, this establishment might not wish to recognize the needs of the LGBT youth, and in consequence treat them with a dose of disdain. This fallacy may also result into imposing conversion therapies on LGBT young people.…

Language is the basis of all ideological concepts. Without language, the fundamental ideas of human society would be clouded in an intangible form where we all understand the idea but fail to express it. As such, it is very important that our discourse stays as unpolluted as possible, encouraging proper wording and politically correct statements discourages discrimination through the nonchalant language that we have plagued pop culture. As the LGTBQ+ community gains their rights, many people became distraught in the illusion that they are different or that they are the root cause for many problems in society.…

The suicide rate in indigenous communities is 1.5 higher compared to the entire USA population. Statistics show native males take their own life more than non-indigenous males of 19 years two to eighteen times greater (ibid). Two-spirit aboriginals have a greater risk of taking their own life than non-native, non-heterosexual individuals. Alcohol and illicit drug use, addiction and death is most prevalent amongst indigenous people as well, along with HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (Fieland et al., p.275-277). All evidence indicates that aboriginal men and women, regardless whether their LGBTQ or two-spirit undergo more mental and physical health complications than any other ethnicity (Fieland et al.,2007).…

Diversity in America has been rising every year. Lately the country’s diverseness has skyrocketed since the legalization of gay marriage. The media is meant to represent the diversity of the country and represent the common people and the number of gay and colored people has shot up immensely within the last 20 years but the media has failed to keep up with this. Most people, white, straight and usually male, feel that the media represents them perfectly and it does. But for the people that are colored, transgender, gay or sometimes female feel that the media does not have enough representation for them and they feel as though the country does not acknowledge the fact that they exist.…

LGBT activists have played an important role in helping to shape public policy in Canada by creating a more equal society for the LGBT community and by extension Canadians at large. For past LGBT activists, equality meant recognition of their lifestyle instead of fear or hostility, it also meant pressuring politicians, organizations and other prominent leaders to adapt and promote non-discriminatory policies which would create less obstacles for LGBT members and welcome them into the public sphere. In recent decades, the mass mobilization of groups has promoted the LGBT community marking a shift from the private sphere, where people were previously forced to hide in shame, into allowing the LGBT community to become integrated into public life. Over the past three decades, activists have led the way in educating the Canadian public which has helped to create a more progressive country that focuses promoting a diverse and accepting society with more LGBT friendly policies, instead of rejecting people because of their sexuality or lifestyle.…

Personal Values I have a strong bias to be an advocate for sexual/gender minorities in the LGBTQ community, especially those with intersectional identities. This is shown in my professional values and my involvement and advocacy with the transgender community. As part of the LGBTQ community and a person of color myself, I understand some of the systemic barriers that affect the transgender community, such as difficulty finding competent providers, lack of insurance coverage, and high poverty rates. Even though I am part of the overall community, I have seen how the LGBQ community often excludes transgender individuals in their issues. This further excludes them as they may not feel heard or supported by other gender and/or sexual minorities…

Planned Parenthood is proud of its vital role in providing young people with honest sexuality and relationship information in classrooms and online to help reduce our nation’s alarmingly high rates of teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. The United States has the highest teen pregnancy rate among the world’s developed nations and approximately 750,000 teenagers in the United States will become pregnant this year.…
