Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew is far different from some of his other plays like Romeo and Juliet. Unlike Romeo and Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew portrays marriage as an economic benefit for the individual and its family rather than marrying for love. These economic barriers, in the end, determine who gets to marry whom.
Petruchio is one of the characters that is going for money rather than love. At Hortensio's house, Petruchio says to Hortensio, “Hortensio, peace. Thou know’st not gold's effect. Tell me her father’s name, that all I need. I will go after her even if her scolding is a defending as thunder in an autumn rainstorm”(1.2.89-92).In other words, Petruchio says “Silence Hortensio, You don't understand what money can buy, tell me her father’s name that’s all I need. Between the three new groom's, they decide to hold a bet. “Well, I say no, and therefore, Sir Assurance, Let’s each one send unto his wife, And he whose his wife is most obedient To Come at first when he doth send for her Shall win the wager which we will propose”(5.2.66-69). In other words, Petruchio says , “Well, I disagree, so let’s put it to the test. Each one of us sends for his wife. Whichever is most obedient and comes most to us shall win the bet that we decide.” Shakespeare shows Petruchio’s love for money like no other. Many would say Petruchio would lose the bet because of the shrew Kate is but he ends up winning. He wins the bet in many ways. Kate has been tamed which allows Petruchio to win the bet. But also, Baptista recognizes that Petruchio has changed her so he get additional benefits. Petruchio’s got exactly what he wanted when he married Kate.
