Taming Of The Shrew And Kat Analysis

Half a millennium. 500 years. The span of time between the creation of the play The Taming of the Shrew written by William Shakespeare and the filming of the movie 10 Things I Hate About You. The former was wrote during the Renaissance era while the latter was wrote during the birth of what has become the modern age. It is easy to spot not only differences in the cultures but also the similarities in the character’s attitudes. Even though 4 centuries separate Katherine (Kate) and Katerina (Kat), they are similar in their violent tendencies, argumentative conversations, and at the end of their respective stories they become more compliant; however, they differ in the reasons behind their actions. As one of the main characters in The Taming of the Shrew, the audience quickly learns that Kate loves to bicker, especially with Petruchio. She argues with him over what time it is when they are about to leave for her father's house, whether the light coming from up above is the moon or the sun, as well as if the person riding on a horse is a gentleman or a fair maiden (4.3.195-203, 4.5.3-21, 4.5.34-58). These scenes reveal Kate’s need to try to speak her mind, not only to revel in getting her way but also to try to prove that she is right and superior to Petruchio. Similarly, Kat enjoys trading jabs back and forth with Patrick along with arguing with a classmate’s view on The Sun Also Rises and Mr. Morgan about his reading material choices for English class (10 Things). In these particular scenes it is indisputable that Kat can argue about anything, but unlike Kate, Kat does it because it is her personality to be negative, forge her own path, and butt heads with almost everyone.
