Tamika Devonne Catchings was born July 21, 1979. As a young child she was being teased for the way she looked with big hearing aids. They picked on her in the classroom but they couldn't in sports. She outworked them and eventually she was better than them. When she was in the third grade she was tired of people picking on her so she threw her hearing aids.
She overcame many obstacles in her life. She had several days where she wish she was normal. When she threw her hearing aids her mother did not replace them. She did not start back wearing hearing aids until she was in college at Tennessee. The basketball coach and trainer recommended her to wear hearing aids.
