The precinct of Tameside was shaped from the East Manchester towns of Ashton-under-Lyne, Hyde, Stalybridge, Dukinfield, Denton, Droylsden, Mossley and Longdendale under the nearby government rearrangement of 1974 and takes its name from one of the three waterways that gone through it - the others being the Medlock and the Etherow.
