Walter Benjamin’s essay acknowledges the strong influence technological reproduction has on our perception. It is important to realize here that Benjamin is referring to the photography of art not photography as an art form in itself. He conveyed that the technological reproduction of high art diminishes its worth as the work of art loses its authenticity, its “aura”. The losing of the aura for Benjamin meant the loss of originality, the loss of singular authority of the artwork that has been reproduced. Furthermore, Benjamin ponders on the idea that the reproducibility has altered how the audience perceives a work of art.…
Charles Emile-August Carolus-Duran’s piece titled Portrait of an Artist in her Studio represents the action of a women painting. This piece was made in the late 19th century (c. 1880) and was considered one of Carolus-Duran’s great society portraits. The piece’s present location is the La Salle University Art Museum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and its original location was *****. This portrait is oil on canvas, and the “quick, loose brushwork” technique can be accredited to masters such as Diego Velasquez and Edouard Manet (placard.) Just as the painting suggests, the painting’s subject is an artist, many say Carolus-Duran’s wife or mistress, in her studio.…
Before we begin let me describe the picture for you. The photograph was originally taken with a black and white film camera, which was standard for the time. The photograph depicts an unknown, unimportant, average young man wearing a lightly colored turtleneck sweater. Centered in the middle of the image, we can…
The work of art I chose to discuss this week is, Equestrian Portrait of King Phillip II (Michael Jackson), an oil on canvas painting done in 2010 by Kehinde Wiley. I chose this painting because Kehinde Wiley’s art interests me. When I first looked up some of his work I found that he has a signature style of remake classic paintings from the 17th century all the way up to the 19th century. But he adds his own twist to them. He gets innovative and incorporates African-American figures into his paintings as the focal point.…
They say a picture is worth a thousands words I agree with that a picture can say a lot to the viewer, same thing with a painting. The photograph and painting I chose to write about is about Queen Elizabeth. The photograph of Queen Elizabeth was taken in 1952 by Beatrice Johnson and it shows Queen Elizabeth wearing a beautiful crown,a yellow patterned dress, with a sash, and diamond jewelry. In the picture the queen has a slight smile not showing any teeth because, it’s a type of picture where it’s taken serious. What I mean by that is she is someone that is well known and that photograph shows her royalty and her importance by wearing her crown.…
Taking into consideration all that I have learned; I believe Alexander Garner was the photographer of this photography of Abraham Lincoln. The Chapter 7 lecture supports that Alexander Garner avidly photographed scenes from the Civil War, scenery in the North and Lincoln and his troops. The Chapter 7 lecture text also supports that Matthew Brady photographer Abraham Lincoln and his son. This led me consider the facts and conclude whether Matthew Brady or Alexander Garner was the photographer of this photo. The text supports that Garner worked as a manager in Brady's Washington D.C. Studio.…
For example, Figure 7 gives an overview of the girl’s dormitory and adjacent facilities at Sacaton, Arizona. Those that are critical of how photo manipulation is used we will be presented with a look at the negative responses that have been triggered by celebrities and viewers which has led to celebrities refusing to have their photos retouched and decided to “take a stand against rampant photo retouching, declaring the practice detrimental to your health which has brought attention to photo manipulation such in the case of Brad Pitt and Kate Winslet who asked photographer Chuck Close to capture them showing all imperfections, we are then left with questioning are they really make up free? In order to do this we must look at both sides of photo manipulation and the effects that it has on the viewer followed by echoing the idea that a photograph points to both the reality and a dream before finally deciding what we see as Art in photography and distinguishing what really exists and what existed enabling us to explore the relationship between photography and the truth. Becky Olstad is a photography instructor at The Art Institutes International Minnesota says “there is a general misconception that Photoshop inherently means manipulation” This is the reason why it is important to discuss the meaning of what photo manipulation actually can do other than promote a disconnected reality, it allows us to control such things like exposure, colour balance, contrast, lighting, all the things that have traditionally been controlled in a traditional…
CRE 312 Digital Photography Assignment 1# Critical Analysis of Two Photographers By Philip Langlois wolfjpl@gmail.com Date Due: 03/11/15 The history of photography can be traced back to the camera obscura which is a box with a pinhole through which light travels and reflects off a mirror showing the image. In a world of digitally edited photography and Photoshop masters, Polaroid pictures have once more become a trend. The instantaneous image of life unabridged appeals because it refuses to portray life through any rose-colored or edited lens, instead allowing memory to appreciate the sanctity of returning to a moment lost. However, through this nostalgia, the brain crops and edits the photograph just as one would on a computer, freezing the moment in memory as better, brighter, and more beautiful than it ever was in life. E. B. White reflects upon this phenomenon in his memoir “Once More to the Lake,” elaborating upon the nature of time, memory, and the human’s perception of reality. Through a heartfelt story about his experience at a lake with…
