I scampered down the cliffs, jumped into the frigid Pacific, and paddled away from the shoreline. We talked about my injury, rehabilitation, and our hopes for the new year. As the sun came up, we both caught our first wave. A perfect wave is like a perfect song-unique in its beauty, and full of the capacity to transport you back to that moment when you first experienced it. This wave was a metaphor for the lesson I now hold dear: Set a challenging goal, develop a plan to achieve that goal, make whatever sacrifices are necessary, and reap the rewards of a well planned and executed routine.
