November 1st, 2015. That day I heard four words which set in motion eight weeks of discipline and determination that I now consider one of my proudest achievements. Those eight weeks provide insight into my character that surprise even me. The words were “Non-displaced talus fracture”. Please let me explain the significance of those words. First, and foremost, a talus fracture is a serious injury to a weight-bearing bone. I have the added inconvenience of being a Type 1 diabetic. My blood sugar is tightly controlled, and I have no complications from this chronic disease, but the Holidays were approaching, and I knew the seasonal delicacies even the strictest dieters indulge in during this season were forbidden if I were to achieve my goal. That goal, simply stated, was to recover from this injury in the shortest time possible, and I set this goal for one reason- tradition.
My parents divorced early in my childhood, and, although I counted among the positives of this situation extra gifts during Christmas, I now attach a greater value to time well spent. The tradition to which I referred earlier is simple, but meaningful to me. Every New …show more content…
I scampered down the cliffs, jumped into the frigid Pacific, and paddled away from the shoreline. We talked about my injury, rehabilitation, and our hopes for the new year. As the sun came up, we both caught our first wave. A perfect wave is like a perfect song-unique in its beauty, and full of the capacity to transport you back to that moment when you first experienced it. This wave was a metaphor for the lesson I now hold dear: Set a challenging goal, develop a plan to achieve that goal, make whatever sacrifices are necessary, and reap the rewards of a well planned and executed routine.
