Tally was a follower and wanted to be like everyone else in her isolated city. Being a Pretty meant that the uglies had to get surgery to make them cooler, beautiful, and superior. This was Tally’s dream as she admired her Pretty friends and craved a luxurious life style. “She was not going to get caught; she had to become pretty…” (Westerfeld). Tally just wanted to have a normal life and have some fun. She only saw what her city showed her and thought that this ‘normal’ was the best thing ever. Tally thought about her life as an ‘ugly’ and how she was still waiting for that perfect pretty life. She started to realize how happy and satisfied these people living in the wild were even though they were not ‘pretty’. “The physical beauty ...also cleared her mind of worries. Every day seemed to change the mountain, the sky, and the surrounding valleys, making them spectacular in a completely new way” (Westerfeld). Tally’s eyes opened up to wholesome life which made her realize that this free life was normal. These people were not interested in all of the parties but they cherished every moment and were out for a good way to survive. “Making ourselves feel ugly is not fun. We are ugly”
