Tallahassee Crime

Tallahassee is not as safe as families may think. Recent Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) reports have shown that Tallahassee, Leon County has a shocking total crime index due to it’s rather small population compared to cities like Miami and Jacksonville.

With a total population of 287,671 in 2016 there was a total number of 16,269 crimes accounted for during 2016. Many families, college students, and citizens did not realize how awful crime was in Tallahassee. “I’ve lived in this city all of my life, I have a family here. I’m not naïve to crime, however I’m naïve to the crime rate of this city. I never realized how high the percentage of crimes we’re in Leon County. Now all I can think of are my two kids” said Terry Washington

I stumbled upon the Field’s family who lived in the low income urban part of Tallahassee. This family has lost brothers, uncles, children, and friends in the city of Tallahassee. “I’ve lost two sons due to crime here in Tallahassee, I may not know the analytics behind crime here. However, I know how it feels to lose people that you love. They were not involved in gang violence. They were gunned down by police who viewed them as animals” said Shella Brown a retired nurse who’s now a pastor in her community.

After presenting these facts to random college students in Tallahassee’s Governor Square Mall a group of girls from Baltimore were stunned by these facts. “I left Baltimore to get away from crime, I was completely oblivious to the crime rates in Leon County. This whole time I thought this was a small safe city” said Jasymn Jordan a sophomore biology student at Florida State University.

During this process another poll took place, after speaking with a total of 24 citizens in the Leon County’s area 50% women & 50% men all from a diverse background. Data showed that after information with the analytics from FDLE 50% of women said they are more fearful now of living in Tallahassee. On the contrary, 50% of men felt indifferent about the data presented. Overall they simply didn’t

This issue has caused multiple studies being conducted in small town police departments to discover the key differences in areas where crime rates have dropped versus areas with troubling crime trends (Weisheit, et al., 1994). While there is less information known about whether proper operations are occurring in rural departments, it was discovered by research conducted in 1994 that the issues in rural areas were not the police officers alone, but the efficiency issues with the lack of proper funding (Weisheit et al., 1994). 1994 was the year where many departments witnessed a large spike in the crime rates, such as homicide, crop thefts, as well as a culture of mistrust in law enforcement operations (Johnson, 2000). This distrust caused many internal conflicts in the communities and still poses many implications (Weisheit et al.,…
