I don’t mean to trash my own kind, but us teenagers always seem to have problems with our parents and isolate from them. I don’t know if it’s the hormones or what, but it is common among my age group. The movie starts out with a teenage boy, Chris who is talking to his older aged dad, Phil. It is clear that this is the typical case of workaholic dad who barely has time for anything and teenager who is cold and distant towards dad because of this, and they live in a giant mansion and are some of the richest people on the block. There’s tons of movies with this type of parental neglect relationship as one of the main themes, like Beastly and The Carrie Diaries, just to name a couple. There’s even a song about it, “Cat’s in the Cradle” by Harry Chapin. Parental Neglect due to Workaholism is a huge problem in today’s society, an obsession or addiction leading people to care more about their work than their family, friends and sometimes even themselves. “Often, the ‘workaholic’ parent will be a good provider in the material sense, whilst being a poor provider in the emotional sense. This can leave the child in the position of harbouring ambivalent feelings toward the parent.” (Hosier).
