Taliban Narrative

2004. American and the Taliban had just started yet another war against each other. Now, in 2015 I remember it just like yesterday. I was a soldier in the armored vehicle where my team and I were on a surveillance shift. The sun would lick on our skins and leave not only a tan but also more or so enough perspiration to keep us hydrated. Nothing was in sight expect a vehicle which was driving away where at that moment I had felt this sudden explosion that came rocketing under my feet.

Gaining consciousness, I slowly opened my eyes. One by one blinking each eye. I didn’t remember anything much but for some reason I couldn’t see any of my team only endless piles of sand.

I am alone in this oven, this desert with only my knowledge to fuel my

I had looked down. I saw grains of sand flying. Then more sand until I turned my head a saw this immense dust storm heading straight for me. I ducked. Is this the end of me? Am I to die in this storm and never see my beautiful children and wife again?

Ducked down and squinting, I heard murmurs of some foreign language. Something grabbed me. Something grabbed my arms and something pointy had injected something into me. Who was it? Was it the Americans?

Time went by and for some reason I was arriving at what looked like the Taliban Flag. Again I heard the same foreign language. Again I was picked and thrown like some piece of rubbish by the sleeves of man which had the Taliban Flag sown on it. I was captured. I heard people speaking my language English. I popped up with the greatest of excitement and I saw my friends. I saw my teammates

I’m single, no children, and no parents, no one to come home to. If you kill me now you can live and can live to the day where you grow old with your wife and see your kids grow. Surely your family is more than me. If you do it, I’ll understand.” That was Joseph’s words.

I just couldn’t. Joseph was like a brother to me.

“ Is this what you wanted? Death of two Americans!” I shouted.

“ Well, yeah why not. Chuck him and the other in the cell and let them rot to hell.” The leader said.

I felt as though a knife had stabbed me multiple times. I just saw two friends of mine die right in front of me. Their bodies lay in the blood soaked ground. Blood would gush out of their body, and bones were broken and pierced the skin where it would stick out.

I stared into the sky praying to God for a miracle so that I could see my wife and my four boys.

If I wasn’t mistaken, I saw an eagle fly by overhead. It circled right and left and right again which meant the Americans had found me. I heard vehicles roll up and guns being fired. The gunfire stopped.

“ Over here. In the cell” I shouted.

They heard and brought Joseph and I

Together, their heroic traits of bravery, strength, determination, and cunning helped them come up with a plan to defeat their enemy, the suitors who were at their house surrounding Penelope, Odysseus’ wife and Telemachus’ mother. A similar father/son relationship existed in the Bible between Joseph and Jacob who were separated for many years. But after years of prison, Joseph stayed true to his father and invited him and his family to live in Egypt with him. Nearing the end of his life, Jacob asked his son Joseph: “If now I have found grace in thy sight, put, I pray thee, they hand under my thigh, and deal kindly and truly with me; bury me not, I pray thee, in Egypt,” (Genesis 47:29), which Joseph sore to him to bury him with his fathers out of Egypt. Jacob also blessed Joseph’s sons Manasseh and Ephraim, that they would be fruitful and multiply into a multitude of…

I remember that we would spend hours playing, running around the arched, brightly lit corridors. I will never forget the uncanny gargoyles that were suspended onto the wall behind, the very same monsters who would assault my sleep and curse me with countless numbers of sleepless nights.…
