Tales of the Deep, Dark Pocomoke “The thing I find really scary about ghosts and demons is that you don’t really know what they are or where they are. They’re not very well understood. You don’t know what they want from you. So it’s the kind of thing you don’t even know how to defend yourself against. Anything that’s unknown and mysterious is very scary” (qtd. in Pack). The world and its old history is filled with folklore and tales of unexplainable phenomena. One area that is a hotspot for these stories is the Eastern Shore of Maryland. From Cecil county to Somerset, the colonial past of the Eastern Shore remains true to this day, and the stories that come along with it are as vivid as they were the day they were created. Sampson Harmon was a member of the Furnace Town community in the 19th century. The bog ore that powered the large furnace in the center of the town eventually ran out leading to an almost unanimous decision to desert the town to search for a new home. Only one person stayed back- Sampson Harmon. He vowed to never leave the town since it was all he knew. He ended up living to be 106 years old and lived in the old Furnace Town until his last day. He even requested in his will to be buried in the town, but those demands were not met. Because of this, the spirit of Sampson Harmon is thought to remain in Furnace Town where he waits for his body to be returned to its proper place. There are people who have witnessed strange sounds or have felt abnormal things on the land where the once flourishing town was and some are convinced it is the ghost of Mr. Harmon (Teich). These stories have become a part of this area. The listener gets to decide whether they choose to believe the sometimes-horrendous stories. The first story originated in Hebron, and comes from the book Haunted Maryland, by Ed Okonowicz. It took place in a small town located in Wicomico County. Since the beginning of the 20th century, dozens of people have witnessed glowing spheres that flash above the back roads and through the woods of Hebron. These spheres are one of the more accounted for abnormal activities of the Eastern Shore. No one knows what they are or where they came from. Even the Hebron Police Department have confused the orbs for a person holding a flashlight. Once in 1952, a patrol car noticed a light and chased it for several miles only for it to suddenly disappear

“You better get in this house before the windigo gets you.” This is a phrase many of us grew up hearing from our mothers, when it was time to come in the house. In my mind, that was kind of like “the boogie man.” Neither of them were a real threat, I had no fear or horrifying images, it just meant it was time to come in the house. When I saw windigo psychosis as an option for this culture-bound syndrome term paper, I choose it for a couple reasons, first I remembered the phrase from above and it is a Native American culture-bound syndrome.…
