As American author John Piper, once said, "Redemption is not perfection. The redeemed must realize their imperfections." In Charles Dicken's novel, A Tale of Two Cities, the themes of resurrection and redemption are displayed to show that suffering will lead one to be recalled to life. Throughout the novel, Dickens mainly focuses on the idea of resurrection and redemption existing as opportunities in life.

Alexandre Manette, a known doctor, was living a life with his family and job when his life starting traumatically changing. The times following an eighteen year imprisonment would be hard for anyone struggling to feel purposeful. After the realization that her father was alive, Lucie Manette was able to be the one that, "united him to a Past beyond his misery, and to a Present beyond his misery: and the sound of her voice, the light of her face, the touch of her hand, had a strong beneficial influence with him almost always"(86). Lucie devoted herself to give a new life to her father—dug him out of his madness hole. Stuck at the bottom dead with no way out, Dr. Manette "rebirthed" by Lucie the one who was able to turn his suffering into a happy, fulfilled life. As

Through his eyes this was the best way to deal with his life as a drunk who did not live up to his potential. “It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far far better rest that I go to than I have ever known"(367). The jackal walked away from the apothecary feeling like "a tired man, who had wandered and struggled and got lost, but who at length struck into his road and saw its end "(308). He had been preparing for this moment of redemption to help benefit someone other than himself. This act gave people a reason to remember him and enlighten his dark past.
