Tale Of Two Cities: Recall To Life

Charles Dickens repeats the idea of being “recalled to life” in order to show the development of principal characters, in both a concrete and an abstract form. These characters are in some way revigorated with hope and desire for a better life. The transition from an imprisonment of some sorts to an almost reincarnation is evident in the lives of Dr. Manette and Sydney Carton. Both of which are imprisoned, one in a jail and the other in a dreary, lifeless soul, but recalled to life by their new love for Lucie. Charles Dickens draws parallels between the lives of two dissimilar characters in the novel A Tale of Two Cities using the motif of “recalled to life” in order to show how love can instill a new desire to live as with Dr. Manette and Sydney Carton. Manette is weak and mentally ill after his imprisonment and Lucie nurses him back to health. Carton has a spiritual epiphany as he gets to know and care for Lucie and he alters his previous lifestyle in order to be remembered as a good person to Lucie and her family. Had the idea of recalled to life been removed from the novel, Carton would be perceived to be emotionless and wishing for an end to life. Also, the understanding of Carton being recalled to life directly relies on Doctor Manette, because the actual words “recalled to life” are used to describe the freedom of the doctor. The direct correlation of the motif with love and new beginnings clearly implies that Carton was acting in a selfless manner with the sacrifice. As stated before, they are both changed by their love for Lucie making the work “recalled” appropriate in both situations. The motif of “recalled to love” exemplifies love’s effect on the outlook of life and how it can change people for the better both physically, mentally, and

Stanley Milgram conducted an experiment in 1963 that showed just how easily ordinary people could be influenced. He proves that people are changed, shaped, and molded by their experiences, some for the better, others for the worse. A similar scenario is present in Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities, where two characters originally driven by similar circumstances make completely opposite decisions at every turn. Madame Defarge, once motivated by a love for her sister and a hunger for blind justice soon becomes fueled by hatred and a thirst for violent vengeance. On the other hand Sydney Carton, originally only motivated by self-hatred and alcoholic tendencies, takes charge when unwavering love leads to an act of selflessness.…

This presence of a revival of hope and faith demonstrated Doctor Manette’s resurrection to the real world again, after being locked up for years. To begin, the author associates Lucie and Madame Defarge with mythology to help the reader understand that love is a more powerful force than hate. For instance, Lucie is represented as a “golden thread” because her love can not be cut and she weaves through people’s lives, tying them all together. She can be compared to the Fates, who control the “threads” of human lives. Lucie sat, “ever busily winding the golden thread…

The historical fiction A Tale of Two Cities set in London, England and Paris, France depicts the French Revolution. The novel by Charles Dickens is understanding towards the overthrow of French aristocracy, but very harsh towards the Reign of Terror that followed. From the title and throughout the book, Dickens uses the motif duality to highlight his themes and to connect the past and the present which is demonstrated through the connected cities of London and Paris, contrasting female characters Lucie and Madame Defarge, and lookalikes Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton. The two cities Charles Dickens alludes in his title are his birthplace London, and Paris, the site of the French Revolution to analyze the social conditions that led to this…

To expand on this, the unfairness of Charles Darnay’s capture and his planned death became bestowed upon Sydney Carton. Initially, one must be familiar with the term, resurrection, in order to analyze it within this intricate classical tale. It is most commonly defined as “rising up from the dead, the resumption of life.” In A Tale of Two Cities, the word takes on a new meaning as it is utilized to represent saving or redeeming in one’s soul, renewed interest in and zest for life, and/or salvation from death, harm, or “nothingness”. Many characters are “reborn”, specifically Dr. Manette, Carton, and Darnay, as they are all saved at life or spirit. The first character that sets Dickens’ rebirth plot into motion is Dr Manette.…
