Page 9 -“But I could never enjoy the room without worrying about Mom and Dad huddled on a sidewalk grate somewhere.” At the end of the book, the dad is dead but during this scene, he is still alive.
Question: This scene couldn’t have taken place after the book, so when did this event take place?
Page 15-“A few days after Mom and Dad brought me home, I cooked myself some hot dogs.” I think this quote reveals a significant trait that Jeanette has. To give a little bit of background information, Jeanette had just gotten out of the hospital for burns she had gotten from cooking hot dogs. Yet a few days after she got home from the hospital, she was once again cooking hot dogs. This shows that Jeanette is brave and can face her fears.

I thought that this quote helps develop the theme of the book. The book is all about the rough childhood Jeanette had. Though Jeanette has a rough childhood where she lived in poverty and wasn’t given as many opportunities to change it, she really turned her life around at the end. She took the opportunities she had and by the end of the book she is a successful individual. Jeanette’s struggle is a beautiful thing because in the end she has achieved greatness. The book shows that no matter who you are, you can achieve greatness. I think this quote does a good job of showing that.
Page 54- “The thing we liked to do the most was go exploring in the desert…Mostly, Brian and I went exploring by ourselves. That desert was filled with all sorts of amazing treasures.” I thought that this quote shows the quest for adventure and exploring new frontiers. The quote shows that Brian and Jeanette liked to explore the desert and discover the treasures it had to offer.
I also thought that this quote reveals a significant trait of Jeanette and Brian. It shows that they are both very adventurous and curious.

" This quote greatly highlights the irony found within Jeannettes childhood. With her families constant moving and not being able to pay the rent on time, they would go on frequent road trips. These road trips included Jeanette and her siblings to be camping outside and believing that they have a great advantage that they got the oppurtunity to sleep under the stars like the Indians, when in reality their parents could not afford anything else. The author tries to meet her mother’s expectations at first. She decides not to respond to her attempt of finding her prodigy after seeing her mother being disappointed with her poor performance at her piano recital (Tan, 391). There is a moment where she has a shouting match between her and her mother when she cries out “Why don’t you like me the way I am? (…)” and it is implied that she doesn’t feel that her mother likes her (Tan, 389). It very well could be that she has a very deep fear in her subconscious that her mother will not like her unless she is a child prodigy.…
