Interview Essay I interviewed Takeshi Koyama, my dad and a diplomat currently working in Japan, who has had experience living abroad for an extended period of time due to his job. He has lived in Denmark, then Greece, then returned to Japan, then went to France, then Kuwait, then Denmark again, and finally back to his homeland, Japan. Takeshi sees his experience overbroad as being one of a kind, as he moved so frequently and he feels that this has enabled him to adapt to new situations faster than others, and that his perspective broadened greatly after seeing much of the world. Feeling that it was very unusual for one person to have moved countries so frequently, I asked Takeshi what he thought of this. He replied “It took some time getting used to, but after a while I got used to it and liked it. I was able to appreciate many different sights during my time overbroad, although there were some difficulties living overseas too”. This arose another question – what were those difficulties? “You get opportunities to visit many of the countries nearby”, Takeshi says. He talked at length of the various countries he was able to visit whilst living in Europe, and of the art and culture. “I was able to visit all those places which are widely known by everyone, such as world heritage sites. I was happy to be able to feel the difference of Japanese and European culture. I felt my world broaden greatly.” His broadened perspective on the world has helped him look at things with an objective eye, and now his world is not just limited to Japan. Takeshi feels that “the world is full of many different kinds of people, and to solve all political and social problems, it is important to understand that not everyone thinks the same way you do, or has the same values as
