Take Home Midterm When working with young children and their families, a social worker must accomplish multiple tasks. One of the first tasks is to complete an assessment in order to get an idea of the situation, and to identify the immediate issues and areas of concern. Once the assessment has been completed, the social worker may create a treatment plan, which includes both short and long term goals. Based on the assessment and treatment plan, the social worker will be able to select a therapeutic intervention that would best meet the needs of the client. The social worker may also provide additional resources to the client to receive further assistance that is needed to meet their individualized needs. An example of this process is Juan and his family, which consisted of his maternal grandmother, Sophia Mendez, maternal grandfather, and younger sister, Maria. Juan and Maria have been living with their maternal grandparents for the past 6 months.

The behaviors displayed by Juan were not being able to sleep, needing to sleep with the lights on, and having a baseball bat under his bed. Waking up screaming in the middle of the night, as well as being quiet in school and not interacting with the other children were additional presenting problems. Juan being unable to self-regulate was another example of a presenting issue. Ms. Mendez, Juan’s grandmother, having difficulty comforting him due to his resistance when he was frightened was another area of concern.
