Takahiro Research Paper

A few years ago, during my sophomore year in high school, I got to experience something that not many others get to experience. While many high school students may go to school with an exchange student, I actually had the pleasure of hosting one, who stayed with my family in our house for the duration of the school year. He was a Japanese student named Takahiro Yamamoto, and he shattered my expectations. Every other exchange student that we had hosted up to that point was very quiet and introverted, and it took us a few days to get them out of their shell. This was different for Takahiro because he loved to play the guitar. He had only been playing for about two years, but he was as skilled, if not better than people who had played for twice as long. We soon realized why, because instead of playing video games or sports, he just played guitar all the time. From sunrise until sunset, he was either eating or playing guitar, filling our entire house with either classic rock, or melodic songs that he had written himself. At any point in time, he would rather be playing guitar, which became evident after we started getting his grades back. …show more content…
This did not apply to Takahiro. He would always procrastinate on his work, and sometimes he just would not do it. He did especially badly in his algebra class, which is what we expected him to do the best in. It was so bad, to the point where we had to sit down with him and talk to him about why he was failing his classes. He did pick hi grades up by the end of the year and averaged around a C, but he could have done much better had he kept himself more

I found this Yakudoshi party fun and very informative celebration (not to mention the great meal my wife and I had). I had an idea of the different types or the variety of food the Japanese culture has to offer, however, I think the most valuable lessons here were learning about the culture. I was fortunate enough to hear how the older generation and the younger generation view the practice of Yakudoshi, compare their views on food, hear and learn about some Japanese etiquettes (especially in the use of chopsticks as I described it in the discussion experience below), and hear their views on interracial marriage. Although the young Japanese couple had a hard time convincing their children to consume some of their meal, watching the young…
