Taiwan was where my father was born, where it was still a third world country when he was born in 1959, to after he left in 1973 to escape from the Taiwanese military draft. When the Japanese took over Taiwan during World War II, it began to help modernize them Taiwan, but it stopped after the Japanese signed the surrender treaty (Hays). The people who lived in Taiwan still lived in wooden houses, traveled by rickshaw or animals, and still had rice farmers (though there are still today). A few years after World War II had passed, Taiwan started to modernize itself without the help of the Japanese (World War II). The military draft was created in Taiwan to try to rebuild the Chinese democratic army to take over China. When Mao Zedong had won and beaten Ching-Kai Shek, it cause him to flee to Taiwan to create a nationalist and democratic government where they still fought until 1949. Ching-Kai Shek hoped that he could take over China by building an army large enough to invade it and succeed, so he created the military draft in Taiwan (Ping-hui). If Ching-Kai Shek never went to Taiwan, there would be no military draft, resulting in my father not having to come to the United States to start a life …show more content…
By following in his footsteps, he teaches me his past mistakes and how to avoid them. Regardless of the obstacles my dad faced, he still accomplished the American Dream of success in his education, job, and family. He went through having to leave everything in Taiwan and come to America with nothing, to having everything he dreamed of. This made him full of determination, something he passed down to his children. My brother and I try really hard in school without needing our parents to remind us constantly to do so, unlike some children who need their parents to nag them to do their homework. As I grew up, I began to utilize the motivation my father had when he was younger and learn from his past mistakes which made me the person I am
