Tahlia Leadership Roles

Decent Essays
How each person reacts to being the leader each week
Tahlia – took leader role from the get go (first time group met). Being in control seems to be her natural role in groups (especially ours as everyone else has very shy/non leader type personalities or tendencies). Happy to be leader, tends to take over a little when hose with not as dominant personalities are meant to be leading
Rory – Doesn’t seem to like leading, looks for confirmation from the rest of the group that he is doing it correctly. Is happy to let members take over (Tahlia is his observer, so she is not ‘available’ to take over). Kate has a tendency to take over when Tahlia is not available
Kate – I tend to ‘guide’ the group more than necessary as I don’t like being wrong. Tends to go along with what group wants but when in the leadership role will give directions (but not forcefully)

Weekly Self S.O.A.P - A. S- Discuss your SUBJECTIVE feelings for this week: I rather enjoyed myself this week. It was nice to take a break from med surg and shadow a team leader for a few hours. I observed how the ICU team leader, Kalang handled the stress of understaff nursing and seeing how she organized the day’s schedule. I observed the meeting in the morning with all management from the units to see how they were handling staffing issues and what they could do to help when one unit has difficulties.…

My two positive roles are Meditator and Spokesperson. As the meditator one can help their fellow team members to reach many decisions without the risk of conflict and confusion. I chose spokesperson because I have the ability to speak for other team members in critical situations that others may feel out of character in doing so (Manning & Curtis, 2012). When a spokesperson has the ability to speak up in a group setting as a spokesperson can also help the team to become more confident in problem solving in the future.…

The character with the most leadership that I noticed was Hiccup. He has a lot of pressure on him being Stoick the Vast’s son, and he’s not really a Viking at all. Watching How To Train Your Dragon is like reading a Mark Twain novel; you watch the boy grow up. In the beginning of the movie Hiccup is more of a burden to the village than helpful. Nevertheless at the end Hiccup leads the other teenagers in Dragon Training to save the villagers from the dragon’s nest.…

As remarked by Northouse (2012), a directive type leadership behavior is one providing guidance and psychological structure; and fits the dogmatic and authoritarian subordinates best, where task demands are complex, ambiguous, and with unclear rules (p. 143). As noted by House (1996), “individuals with a low preference for independence and self-direction will find non authoritarian directive leadership to be valent” (p. 326). During my review of the literature, I found that a good leader-subordinate relationship is essential in overall effectiveness of a team. To be effective as a leader, it is important to have a mixed bag of talents. “What is the proper mix of relational characteristics to promote desired outcomes?”…

In terms of leadership style, I would consider myself more towards social leadership that focused more on teamwork, resolving disputes and providing support (Myers, 2013). Instead of directing the other group members on what to do, I distributed my authority with my group members by giving them the opportunity to voice their ideas as well as involving them in decisions making processes. I believed that group members felt more appreciated when their suggestions were acknowledged which then enhanced more creative and productive thoughts. This was due to the fact that brainstorming that involved the entire group encourages and stimulates ideas from different individuals (Nemeth, Personnaz, Personnaz & Goncalo,…
