Tahitian Women On The Beach

Improved Essays
After my first glance, I knew something about this painting was different. Was it the subject matter? Perhaps it was the unusual use of color. Paul Gauguin’s “Tahitian Women on the Beach” is a very complex piece of art. It took quite a bit of observation on my part to pin down exactly what caused such a strong reaction. I consider myself to be quite creative, but when it comes to art, I am at a loss.
This painting features a Tahitian landscape with two women in it. The women are sitting on a beach with the ocean behind them. A dark, blue sky with very dense clouds above is in the background. While the sky suggests it would be dark outside, it appears to be a very bright day. On the ground between them are a small box, a flower, and straw.

The balance of the image is interesting to me. It’s almost a mirrored image with the way the birds are placed. If you spin the image upside down you can see practically the same image. I fine the detail in this image to be what really stands out to me. The colors and texture of the birds are what really makes the painting look so…

In this exceedingly powerful painting, “Figures in a Landscape” painted in 1972 by Sidney Goodman, a child, woman, and man are in what looks to be a park because of the sandbox and blue and red swing set. In the background the mountains are bright and happy with houses surrounded by many tall green trees. On the right side of the painting is a huge dark gloomy cloud like when a murder is about to occur in a horror movie. The figures look like something is going on in their mind, maybe they are unhappy with each other or something is really upsetting them. When I see this painting I feel as if the figures are in there own world not aware of their surroundings.…

Painted by George Bellows in 1909, Stag Night At Sharkeys, a part of the Cleveland Museum of Art’s since 1922, portrays the new and dark city life of early twentieth century New York City. Unlike any other artwork at the time, this specific painting became known as a reputable piece because of the artist’s ability to capture a specific moment in time, lasting merely a second, and turn it into a magnificent work of art. Through the use of color, detailing, and viewpoint, Bellows was able to create a painting that depicts the unique, roaring atmosphere of a vigorous prize fighting match. The use of distinctive elements and details within the painting illustrates the emotion and tone the artist is trying to get across to viewer, and to where…

1). Beaucout is a praised Canadian artist, and within art historians “Portrait of a Negro Slave” has been exalted on style, composition, and brush stroke. Nelson uses a post-colonial feminist lens to question these embedded colonial bias and Eurocentric ideals within art history, which dictate every aspect of the discipline, including what has value to study (Nelson 22-23). Nelson critiques this model by saying that to talk about style, erases her as a person and the racist and sexist implication of this painting have gone unnamed (Nelson 22-23). Nelson uses a historical lens to show that the context in which the portrait was produced shows her as a visual commodity rather than a human.…

As pieces of art go, not every piece can be considered easy to look at. In fact, most are considered unpleasant and difficult to understand with a deeper meaning that is hidden within it. The artwork in question is an abstract painting of a young woman, made out of a series of shapes that come together in form of the painting. The painting I chose to do an analysis on is “Kneeling Mother with a Child at Her Breast”. In the painting I see a African women with dark skin kneeling down on both knees holding her baby in her left arm with one hand behind head and the other on the buttocks. She is kneeling on a round grey mat while the baby is sucking on her nipple. She is also starring in her baby’s eyes with somewhat of a grin on her face. The painting I chose was Frank Stella’s “Flin Flon VIII”. It is an acrylic piece on canvas characterized by a mixture of curving and straight lines that interlock, vibrant colors, and an emphasis on the circle in the middle of the canvas. A huge quantity of negative space is present in the painting and the painting emits a smooth texture. The painting is one hundred and eight inches squared, making it one of the largest paintings in the San Diego Art Museum. This could tell the viewer something of what the artists though of gender roles at the time. It was a new idea for most and many artists did not accept it thus rarely allowing women into advanced forms of artistic education. Though this image clearly states the artist's possible perspective on gender roles it also holds an underlying reference to the current era. Though the woman has control of the art in her sketching the image around her depicts a landscape, something that women were, at the time, allowed to create. Ultimately rounding back to though women were granted with the chance to make art freely they had limitations as an artist, in which landscape was one of the only forms of art they could create besides still life, genre, and…

“The Scream” I really like this painting because somehow it involves mystery and insecurity and to my eyes, the rare views in it reflect a sense of how deep the feelings and thoughts of a person can be. In addition, the fact that the composition does not allow viewers to appreciate the face of the screaming person, is what has drawn me to it. Even though it seems to be that it was a lovely afternoon for everyone, it seems that it was not for the scared looking person. Although two boats are seen on the lake and two people walking very pleasingly behind, the scared looking person seems to be astonished and perhaps confused toward something. Hence, looking at this mysterious individual posing his hands on his face with his mouth open has given me the impression that he or she is appreciating something non real that no one else is able to notice; no one but him.…
