Taft School Leadership Essay

According to the United States’ Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the national unemployment rate for the month of March is estimated to be 4.5% give or take. Unfortunately, during the next two months The Taft School’s unemployment will be about 6.5 times as high as the national average, standing at a whopping 29%. Every student at Taft has a role -- roles that come in a myriad of forms and combinations -- and this spring, in the wake of what is essentially the mental departure of the Senior class, roughly 160 of these roles will be vacated, destroyed, and reincarnated. The majority of this complex process of effectively redefining the specific roles of Seniors at Taft is completed during the spring, a spring that is meant to be particularly …show more content…
For example, Taft’s Headmonitors are easily the most visible leaders within the Senior class. Headmonitors are good examples of leaders because they often employ their own independent tactics to differentiate themselves within a role that seems to be confined to specific duties and characteristics. Headonitors like Tommy Robertshaw, Vienna Kaylan, and Quentin Harris each embodied completely different leadership styles and ways of connecting with the student body, but they each advocated for what they were passionate about, whether it was theater productions, football, or social change. This diversification and differentiation within a seemingly confined role is also evident in another “common leader”: the captain of a team. For instance, as captains of the Taft Boys Crew Team, Rich Gilland, Jack Torney, and Evan Miller each employed vastly different approaches to connecting and uniting their team. The most beautiful aspect of it, is the fact that no matter how dissonant their leaderships styles were from each other, all of them were successful leaders in my opinion. Furthermore, it isn’t even required to be vocal or particularly assertive to be a model leader. James Lee, a dormitory monitor on HDT 4 last year, used a reserved overtone in his leadership style, but managed to make a lasting impression on virtually every resident of the floor last year. …show more content…
There is always a crevice of Taft that needs a trailblazer to lead it, and that is precisely what defines Junior Spring. Junior Spring is the specific time in our lives when we are free to choose our place within the community. Every one of us is free from societal expectations and the judgements of our peer during this time because every member of our class is in the same process of redefinition. In the end, every single one of us is searching for that particular pigeonhole of influence with which we can each be a vehicle of change within Taft society as Seniors this fall, a pigeonhole that I am genuinely assured each of us will find for ourselves during these puzzling and immensely enigmatic remaining two months of Junior

Leadership is vital in any organization, sport, or club. Not everyone is constructed to be a good leader and for some that can be a hard pill to swallow. Lord of the Flies is a book that exemplifies leadership. Most know Ronald Reagan best for his acting career and presidency, but not many look back to his past and sees how his leadership roles started early in life; which is where mine starts. Throughout my life, leadership has always been a part of me, I have always strained to help others and try to lead them the right way. Trying my hardest has helped me make a great impact to those around me by showing them what can be done. When I was in eighth grade, a new opportunity was given to my class to take a high school course early, and I decided to be one of the few to go through with it, knowing it would be a lot of work. I started thinking about how this could be a benefit to me.…

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

Governor’s School Last summer, I attended governor's school west where three hundred and twenty-five bright and open-minded students from all across North Carolina gathered for five and a half weeks in a college campus setting. To me, this was a big milestone in life that changed me for the better. We left our cozy lives of families and friends to start with a clean slate with strangers we’ve never seen in our lives. At first, we thought of it as a sacrifice of our summer to glamorize our college application, but throughout the program we experienced things that exceeded beyond our expectations.…

From the start of my four year commitment to football and marching band I saw leadership all around me. My first summer of football my freshman year the seniors were prime examples of leadership. They were right there to correct form on our lifts, blocks, and set the overall example of what it meant to be a Mead football player. Later that summer I threw in marching band camp to my agenda. The drum major, my sister, lead the band with kept the entire band in order, and worked with us until our sets were flawless.…

At the corner of Walker St. and Crescent St., across the road from Walker Jr. High School, passed La Palma Hospital, lies the largest campus of Anaheim Union High School District, John F. From the parking lot into the school, I see Kennedy ’s quote, painted on the edge of the entrance, stating, “Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country.” Many other quotes by graduating classes were painted on the edge of the hallway overheads with the year underneath and all meant to inspire people. In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…
