Leadership in the Army exists on three different levels. According to FM 6-22, “Army leaders assume progressively broader responsibilities across direct, organizational, and strategic levels of leadership.” (FM 6-22, pg. vi) Tactical leadership falls under the category of direct leadership and involves face-to-face interaction between the leader and their subordinates. Organizational leadership is more focused on the overall success of the organization and less focused on the individuals. Tactical leadership, because it is direct leadership, is the most rewarding level of leadership and has the greatest impact on the success of the mission. Tactical and Organizational leadership are both vital levels of leadership and can positively influence Soldiers. By looking at the similarities and differences between the two, you can clearly see that successful leaders, at both levels, will provide positive coaching and mentorship through effective communication. They will ensure the Soldiers in their care are will equipped and trained. You can also see that because of the direct impact tactical leaders have on individual Soldiers, the most valuable asset of the Army, tactical leadership has the greatest impact on the success of the mission. Tactical leaders throughout history have overcame the inefficiencies of their Organizational leadership. The United States Army is great because of the quality of the individual Soldiers that serve. No level of leadership has a greater impact on those Soldiers than tactical leadership. Tactical Leadership is direct leadership and is the most rewarding level of leadership. Leaders at all level should ensure that the decision and policies they create empower and equip their tactical leaders to perform their jobs to the best of their
