Taco Soup: A Short Story

Improved Essays
Imagine, walking into your house after a long day school. You take off your shoes as a smell reaches your nose from the oven. Cornbread. You look to the counter and notice a crock pot. This only means one thing; taco soup! You drop your bags and bolt into the kitchen, admiring your favorite meal. You look into the crock pot and drool at the sight of ground beef, kidney beans, corn, and jalepenos simmering in the red, bubbly liquid. Suddenly, a huge red thing appears between the delicious ingredients. You gasp loudly and step back. “No,” you say in disbelief. “No, it can’t be!” Your mom put slimy, gross tomatoes in your favorite meal. I am often annoyed and complain loudly when my mom adds tomatoes to my taco soup.

“Mom!” you yell. “Why? Why do you betray me like this?” Your mother strides in the kitchen wearing her favorite apron

“Number one,” she smiles, “tomatoes greatly enhance the beauty and taste to the taco soup family.” You look at her confused. “Number two. Everyone else is this house loves tomatoes.” You see her point there, but still. They might like the soup without it, also, but you continue to let your mother speak. “Number three.” She says in a weird accent. “Tomatoes are healthy. Plus they are a fruit and you love fruit!” You have had enough. You thought these would be good reasons! Slamming your palm on the counter, you say, “But I still have tomatoes!” Slowly you turn to leave the room but someone gives you a hug from behind and stops you. It was your mom. “Answer me this sweetie. What does your attitude say about your heart?” You struggle to break free from the embrace so you stop and think for a moment. “Well,” you answer embarrassed. “There are thousands of kids in Africa that would do anything to get their tiny hands on this meal.” Your mom lets you break free. “Yes,” she says. “Many little children would adore my cooking!” You chuckle and turn to face your

“The Jacket” Fictional Narrative Assessment Gary Soto’s “The Jacket” tells the story of a jacket that the author received when he was in 6th grade. The jacket his mother lovingly purchased for him was NOT the kind of jacket he had asked for, and in his eyes, brought him three years of bad luck. Rewrite Soto’s personal narrative as if his mother HAD bought him the neat jacket - “like bikers wear: black leather and silver studs with enougt belts to hold down a small town.” Tell your version from the day the author sees the jacket on his bedpost, to the end of day when he first wore the new jacket to school. The lawsuit case against Taco Bell was dropped following the ads and videos created by the organization disproving the accusation of their meat only being thirty-five percent beef (Crandall, Parnell, & Spillan, 2013). Taco Bell was dedicated in protecting their product against such claims. The company did not hide the ingredients used in their meat from anyone. They addressed the public head-on about the crisis and never backed down. A plan was developed to minimize the effects of the crisis, and they followed through with the plan.…

Surprisingly, there was more disagreement about Taco Bell’s crisis management strategy when responding to the 2011 ‘meat-less’ class action lawsuit from the Beasley Allen Law Firm than I expected. As a result, from the onset of the crisis and Taco Bell’s subsequent response, pundits offered unexpectedly divergent assessments of Taco Bell’s bold strategy. To start, several pundits vigorously disagreed with Taco Bell’s crisis management communication strategy of thanking the plaintiffs for filing the lawsuit and allowing the organization to tell its story to consumers regarding the meat content of their tacos and other menu items. Subsequently, several Public Relations and Crisis Management experts criticized Taco Bell for its playful approach…

Tamales Through Time This year’s craziness and smells of carne and my family gathering in my grandparents’ kitchen brings a big, bubbly smile to my face, like always, because I know this means the official start of Christmas, and Christmas means I get to be with my family and Santa is going to bring me presents! My mom says that she heard that I’m on Santa’s nice list for the 5th year in a row! I always look forward to tamale making because I get to be around all my cousins and aunts and uncles and watch them make yummy food for our Christmas Eve feast while I make gingerbread houses! And every year when I ask if I can help this time, grandma always explains while grinning that “you can’t help with the tamales until you’re tall enough to reach the counter because someone so tiny will get knocked into the masa and then we will have tamales that taste like Alejandria!…

Mood In my story 7-Eleven Burrito, I created a peaceful mood in the beginning and end of my short story using descriptive language. When Peter entered the 7-eleven shop, “Sunlight filtered through the wide shop windows, the warm cocoa odor of the coffee machine wafted through the air, and the low humming of the hot dog machine snored in the background. ”(1). The use “sunlight”, “warm”, and “snore” create an idyllic atmosphere as they convey a feeling similar to waking up early in the morning to the songs of birds and warm sunlight on your face. This is because the word sunlight has a positive connotation, it makes the reader feel light inside due to its importance in our lives.…

Laughter has been said to be the best medicine of all. This medicine, however, cannot cure the effectiveness of an argument and instead can be seen to poison it in some cases. In Laura Fraser’s “Why I Stopped Being a Vegetarian,” Fraser depicts personal incidents of dabbling in vegetarianism and uses this to assert that people should not be vegetarian and instead decrease the amount of meat consumed. Though humor may then seem to be the appropriate method of conveying her opinion, it is often detrimental towards her argument because it causes her ideas to seem nonsensical and often apathetic towards those who wholeheartedly believe in vegetarianism.…

In, "Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food," student of history and creator Jeffrey M. Pilcher contends that globalization has been inconvenient, and extended Mexican sustenance. Pilcher claims that the nearness of worldwide impact of America has taken away the true Mexican cooking from their nation. Pilcher encountered how Taco Bell had the distinctive varieties direct. He went to this well known fast-food chain to complexity it, to a nearby taco truck to see which one was really fast food. The taco truck had new vegetables, they made his request directly before him, and it took around two minutes to get his sustenance.…
