The Pros And Cons Of Digital Textbooks

In schools across America, a situation is arising whether to be pro-technology or anti-technology. The question is if all or most textbooks should become digital on tablets or stay printed in regular books. Some people who are pro digital textbooks say so because it is cheaper and it has the ability to hold more books on it than just one. Others who are against it say so because staring at a computer screen can damage the eyes, as well as, the damages costs associated with tablets are extremely expensive. Tablets should not be used in place of textbooks because they are easy to break and costly to replace, it is can inflict more harm to the young bodies than just reading a simple book, and it will ultimately be time consuming for both the teacher and the student.
For the districts of schools to buy the tablets to make it available for every student, it will be extremely expensive. A tablet can normally run from about $700 to about $2000. After this initial cost, to purchase the textbooks would be about less than $20 for the digital versions. Compared to a textbook, which could run about $200 at the max, this is a noticeably different

The use of tablets to replace physical textbooks is harmful because it can lead to “eyestrain,” “headaches,” and “difficulty focusing” (Cashin-Garbutt). The tablets can cause eyestrain and headaches early on in a child’s life depending on when the use is started. These physical problems can continue to trouble the students even up until their adulthood. Now, this is not saying that this is an immediate injury. This is something that could start affecting the children later on in life. However, if the tablets were to replace the textbooks, than it will begin altering the young bodies sooner than if they were not exposed to it so much.
