My position is that the immigration policy should provide immigrants with a means of legally residing in the country. In order to achieve this, they are required fulfill a series of requirements. These requirements include admitting guilt, paying a reasonable, one-time fee, paying taxes, and refraining from any criminal activity. These reforms will provide families the opportunity to work and live in the country legally; they can survive without the fear of police busting in their home or parents separated from children. They are provided the benefits and protections the United States has to offer, as long as they remain in good standing. Illegal immigrants will still be penalized by the fine and the inability to attain legal citizenship. Any illegal immigrant caught without meeting these requirements is eligible for deportation. Although there will still be deportations, many of the practices in Taibbi’s chapter presents a clear abuse of power and should be disallowed. These actions include DUI stops at unreasonable hours, racial targeting, and deportation without a judge or counsel (Taibbi). Although it may be unfeasible to completely eradicate racial bias within police departments, actions should be taken to address unjust practices that are exponentially disenfranchising illegal immigrants and legal
