Ta-Nehisi Coates does not leave the reader hopeless at the end of his book Between the World and Me. Coates’s book does go through some gruesome and depressing details that he has carried along with him throughout his life, but he assures his son (who he is writing the book to) that America has had progress. Coates assures his son that there is beauty in African American lives. He has laid out the problems that white supremacy has to do with justice and race, and it is only a matter of America changing its ways, which it has been deeply rooted in, in order to make a difference. As well, Claudia Rankine in Citizen portrays optimism. Citizen helps to clarify that moving on from the past is a necessity in America, but also to remind inhabitants that the struggles that individuals of various ethnic groups have gone through, in order to get where they are now, should not be forgotten. Rankine also gave examples of problems that America has through her American lyric, but instead of being her personal experiences, she discussed experiences of her friends. All in all, Citizen and Between the World and Me gave different points of view about race and justice, but leave the audience with hope in the
